Glover Teixeira vs. Jiri Prochazka

Light Heavyweight Main Event Championship Bout

Saturday, June 11, 2022 – 09:05 PM EDT at Singapore Indoor Stadium

Glover Teixeira (33-7-0)

The savvy veteran nature of Glover Teixeira has allowed the Brazilian-born fighter to extend his professional career beyond the age at which most MMA athletes compete.

A dedicated background in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a love for boxing since an early age has been the cement in a solid mixed martial arts tenure that stems back over 19 years.

Behind a technical boxing offense, Teixeira possesses a BJJ black belt that’s assisted him in winning notable tournaments like the gold medal in the ADCC South American Championship.

First UFC Light Heavyweight Championship Defense

Entering his 22nd UFC bout on Saturday will also be Teixeira's first UFC light heavyweight championship defense.

Experience fighting at the elite level of mixed martial arts will undoubtedly be his most prized asset. Seven years after his first UFC light heavyweight title opportunity, 42-year-old Glover Teixeira defies the UFC odds and steps into the octagon to defend his newly collected crown.

Most fighters become lethargic and slow down towards the latter stage of their careers.

Still, significant victories over Karl Roberson, Ion Cutelaba, Anthony Smith, Thiago Santos, and Jan Blachowicz prove that age isn’t anything but a number.

Glover Teixeira MMA Accomplishments

  • UFC Light Heavyweight Champion (One time, current)
  • UFC Performance of the Night (Four times)
  • UFC Fight of the Night (Two times) vs. Ovince Saint Preux & Alexander Gustafsson
  • UFC Knockout of the Night (One time) vs. Ryan Bader
  • UFC Submission of the Night (One time) vs. James Te-Huna
  • Most stoppage wins in UFC Light Heavyweight division (13)
  • Most submission wins in UFC Light Heavyweight division (7)

Jiri Prochazka (28-3-1)

Jiri Prochazka was thrown amongst the UFC elite with little thought from Dana White & co; signing the decorated martial artist was a no-brainer with such talent displayed in other promotions.

The former RIZIN light heavyweight champion obliterated the competition for a decade before his UFC debut.

In the summer of 2020, he left the talented Volkan Oezdemir in a slump upside the cage upon arrival at Fight Island.

Prochazka’s martial arts journey began with Muay Thai training as a teenager; he eventually became a national world champion in the discipline, so a transition to MMA in 2012 was no surprise.

Prochazka’s UFC Ternure

After just two fights into his UFC tenure, the Czech Republican standout has earned himself a title opportunity and the chance to lift a championship in a record number of fights.

Prochazka left Oezdemir and Dominick Reyes unresponsive and collected consecutive bonus awards for good measure; whilst some believe the jump into title contention is unfair, critics should be reminded that he’s already defeated two titles challengers in a dominant fashion.

Jiri Prochazka MMA Accomplishments

  • UFC Performance of the Night (Two times)
  • Rizin FF Light Heavyweight Champion (One defense)
  • RIZIN 2015 Heavyweight Grand Prix Runner Up
  • Gladiator Fighting Light Heavyweight Champion (One defense)

UFC 275: Teixeira vs. Prochazka Breakdown and Analysis

Teixeira Fight Style

The Brazilian has shown impeccable skills in both his boxing and grappling offenses.

Still, in a fight where I’d expect him to avoid the fight-ending power of Prochazka, a grounded fight will be the most viable game plan for the defending champion.

How Can Teixeira Defeat the Prochazka?

Teixeira will be the most equipped grappler that Prochazka has ever faced. If the Brazilian native has watched the tape on his opponent versus Muhammed Lawal, he may also fancy his chances with a knockout punch.

Prochazka Fight Style

A background in Muay Thai becomes evident once you witness Jiri inside the octagon.

Still, an alarming lack of defense will need to be highlighted moving forward, particularly if he wants to be a successful defending champion.

Jiri uses a lot of feints, quick footwork, and one of the most unorthodox styles I’ve ever witnessed from a light heavyweight.

Reminiscent of Anderson Silva, Stephen Thompson, and even Sean O'Malley, Jiri holds his hands low and fires lightning-quick jabs, hooks, and uppercuts from the most awkward angles.

How Can Prochazka Defeat Teixeira?

He will look to keep this fight standing, work his combinations from the outside and give the aging veteran a Muay Thai striking battle he may not be able to handle.

Teixeira vs. Prochazka Betting Prediction

The available betting odds at Bookmakers Review favor the challenger, as Teixeira may never receive the respect he deserves from the oddsmakers.

The champion has been positioned as a betting underdog in his previous three bouts, but as sportsbooks anticipate the six-fight win streak to end on Saturday, they shouldn’t be so confident.

I believe Teixeira could instantly take Prochazka down and submit him, but the offensive striking skills of the challenger are concerning.

I don’t believe this fight will reach the championship rounds, and I’ll be waiting to hit the under 1.5 round prop once it becomes available.
