Career Analysis

Perhaps Valentina Shevchenko should have never wet her feet in a higher weight class. If we remove her minor stint in the bantamweight division, she’d unquestionably be the greatest women’s fighter in mixed martial arts history.

However, earning the G.O.A.T [greatest of all time] public title shouldn’t reflect the accolades and accomplishments of Valentina. After seven years in the UFC, she’s continuously knocked off every challenger in the flyweight division and without too much disrespect intended… the competition level hasn’t been close.

A lifelong experience in various forms of martial arts has evolved the Peruvian queen into an unstoppable force, and outside of two – very close – decision losses to Amanda Nunes up a weight class, Valentina has been untouchable during her UFC tenure.

Taila Santos's Breakdown

Fighter Profile

  • Pro MMA Record: (19-1-0) (3 KOs, 6 submissions)
  • Age: 28
  • Height: 5'6"
  • Reach: 68.0"
  • Trains With: Astra Fight Team/Thai Brasil Floripa
  • Origin Fighting Style: Muay Thai

Career Analysis

28-year-old Taila Santos is living the dream as she’s propelled into a flyweight championship bout just three years and five fights into her UFC career.

The Brazilian-born muay thai specialist has been perfecting her muay thai striking since the age of 16, behind the savvy skills of her father, who then sent her on to Astra Fight Team to extend her skills, and she still resides there to this day.

Losing a split decision to Mara Borella on her UFC debut in 2019 wasn’t the fairy-tale beginning and gave Santos her first taste of defeat. Still, the newest title challenger at 125lbs quickly shot up the rankings with a 4-fight win streak versus some of the division's most experienced.

Shevchenko’s Fight Style: How Can She Defeat Santos?

One simply doesn’t lose to Mara Borella and step into the octagon versus Valentina Shevchenko. And experience is undoubtedly one of the most significant factors in this bout. The proven longevity throughout 25-minute bouts and the most elite level of competition faced are all siding with the champion without considering each fighter's skill set.

I genuinely believe Valentina can win this fight in all potential methods of victory, whether it’s a striking or grappling battle, and if it goes all five rounds or if the champion finishes it inside the distance.

The only variable I’m struggling with is attempting to predict if Santos can defend well enough to survive into the championship rounds.

Santos Fight Style: How Can She Defeat Shevchenko?

Santos has the chips stacked against her, but we must remember, this is MMA, it’s a fight in a cage between two highly trained athletes, and anything can happen – see Nunes vs Pena.

A puncher’s chance is present in all fights, but it's not a respectable approach to wagering on fights. I don’t believe Santos has the striking or grappling skill to outperform Valentina, so I can’t give her a path to victory outside of a shock stoppage.

Shevchenko vs. Santos: Betting Pick and Prediction

The available odds at the best sportsbooks and betting sites favor Shevchenko, of course. And naturally, we’re looking at an extremely juiced line that isn’t approachable from a moneyline standpoint.

For this reason, I’m going to give Santos the benefit of the doubt as she’s never been stopped via strikes or submission in 20 professional bouts.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Valentina eventually found a path to stop the fight in the later rounds, but the Over 3 ½ is the only betting value I can back with at least a small piece of confidence.
