Carlston Harris vs. Jared Gooden
UFC Vegas 71 Welterweight Bout
Betting Preview
Harris Analysis
Carlston Harris (17-5-0) is a former BRAVE Combat Federation champion, and when arriving at the UFC in 2021, he stormed through back-to-back opponents with an anaconda choke and a TKO finish for his highlight reel.
Harris is a noteworthy prospect, but unfortunately, he crossed paths with Shavkat Rakhmonov in his previous bout – a fighter who’s stormed to the top of the welterweight rankings since. We can’t hold this loss against Harris and behind a complete skillset,
Gooden Analysis
Returning to the UFC following a previous 1-3 stint between 2020 and 2021 is Jared Gooden (22-8-0).
However, it wasn’t planned, and as a short-notice replacement, how prepared will Gooden be?
On the bright side, Gooden has collected a 4-1 record since leaving the UFC and is aged just 29. While there’s undoubtedly room for improvement, we won’t know how capable the American is until he proves himself on the big stage.
UFC Vegas 71 Parlay Prediction
Harris is a diverse striker, and although he’s capable on the ground with his Brazilian jiu-jitsu attributes, he’ll most likely look to utilize his striking offensive know-how to outperform Gooden.
Gooden won’t present Harris with a takedown threat, which is good news for the Guyana-born fighter. However, should Gooden attempt a takedown, he’ll need to watch his neck because Harris is a man possessed when gifted a choking opportunity.
Gooden has power and serviceable striking, but the diversity and higher level of experience garnered by Harris should reign supreme. Furthermore, Gooden wasn’t prepared for this bout, and the short notice arrangement should play right into his opponent's hands.
Parlay Best Bet Leg 1: Harris Moneyline
The available UFC odds with Bookmakers Review agree with our take and have slapped a (-305) price tag on Harris.
If the price weren’t so steep, I’d happily play Harris as a single wager, but due to the price, it’s a parlay or pass situation.
UFC Pick: Carlston Harris ML (-315) at Bookmaker
Sedriques Dumas vs. Josh Fremd
UFC Vegas 71 Middleweight Bout
Betting Preview
Dumas Analysis
Welcome to the UFC, Sedriques Dumas (7-0-0). Nicknamed “The Reaper,” Dumas made his name known with a round 1 guillotine choke on Dana White’s Contender Series 2022, but he’s most recognized for a lethal striking offense.
Following the hype of a fighter isn’t wise, but Dumas is unquestionably a special talent on the feet. He’ll need to keep his grappling defense in check, but there aren’t many lower-level UFC middleweights that will handle his fists.
Fremd Analysis
It’s been a rough beginning for Josh Fremd (9-4-0), now 0-2 in the UFC.
There’s no shame in losing to Anthony Hernandez in your promotional debut; however, tasting defeat to a 2-2-0 Tresean Gore hasn’t helped his case.
UFC Vegas 71 Parlay Prediction
Dumas and Fremd are like oil and water, as we’ve got a dangerous striker facing an opponent who heavily relies on his wrestling background.
Fremd’s wrestling accolades are recommendable, but as we’ve witnessed thus far, he can’t string together consistent takedowns, do damage, and achieve this for three straight rounds in the UFC.
Dumas, on the other hand, are incredibly dangerous on the feet. He isn’t a one-shot knockout type of striker; he’s technical with his striking combinations and has displayed a high level of striking intelligence during his 7-0 unbeaten run.
Dumas can strike moving backward, pressure, counter strike, and he’ll own a significant speed advantage. Yes, he’ll likely suffer a takedown or two, but during a three-round fight, I expect him to unleash one of his well-crafted combinations to make it an early night for Fremd.
Parlay Best Bet Leg 2: Dumas Moneyline
The available UFC Vegas 71 odds with Bookmakers Review favor the newcomer, and I’m not surprised, considering Fremd’s poor outing last time.
Don’t get it wrong, Fremd is no slouch and can certainly wrestle his way to victory.
But against the aggressive striking nature of Dumas, I must side with the dangerous striker who’ll have an instant standing advantage at the beginning of every round.
