Jailton Almeida vs. Anton Turkalj

UFC 279 Catchweight Bout (220lbs)

Saturday, September 10, 2022 – 08:00 PM EDT at T-Mobile Arena

Jailton “Malhadinho” Almeida

  • Pro MMA Record: (16-2-0) (6 KOs, 10 submissions)

For those who've paid close attention to Jailton Almeida since his impressive Dana Whites Contender series debut, almost one year to the date, you'll know he successfully lived up to the hype.

From his dominant DWCS success, the Brazilian got straight to work under the UFC banner by ground and pounding Danilo Marques in his promotional debut to then submitting Parker Porter earlier this year.

Almeida says, "he was born fighting", as both his father and uncle were involved in the arts. From the tender age of 11, Almeida started jiu-jitsu and built a legacy in the sport. And then, in 2012, he switched over to MMA.

With only two losses on his professional record, both of which arrived early in his career, Almeida is now on an 11-fight win streak. More impressively, those eleven bouts were all stopped via submission or knockout.

Jailton Almeida Fighting Analysis

Almeida's most undeniable tool in his MMA skill box would be the grappling offense and BJJ black belt he proudly owns. Unlike many BJJ fighters in MMA, he additionally boasts some wrestling chops you wouldn't necessarily expect.

He'll shoot for power double leg takedowns, body locks, or utilize an outside leg trip.

MMA isn't a one-way street; fortunate for Almeida, he was raised in a family of boxers. You cannot ignore his boxing fundamentals. A boxing background has assisted him in claiming five victims by way of knockout.

We could be looking at a title contender of the future, especially with the work rate he maintains, and it doesn't seem to fade, despite being in the heavier weight classes.

Almeida vs. Turkalj Betting Pick and Odds

Anton Turkalj (8-0-0) is undefeated, and this always seems impressive from the outside. However, the level of competition he's fought isn't notable, and I'm surprised anybody would accept a contest versus Almeida for their UFC debut, it personally seems like a death wish.

Top-rated sportsbooks have positioned Almeida as the second biggest favorite of the UFC 279 fight card; only Khamzat Chimaev at -1100 is higher priced than the Brazilian.

While the odds can never solidify a fight result, we rarely have to deal with such heavy juice in MMA. That said, expecting Almeida to continue his submission/knockout streak can dramatically reduce our odds and give us some decent value to work with.
