Since joining the UFC in 2019, Rafael Fiziev has displayed an elite level of striking output generated from a lifelong experience in the world of muay thai.

Born in Kyrgyzstan, a long list of accomplishments includes his nation's Muay Thai Championship in 2007, 2008, and 2009, the Kazakhstan IFMA Muay Thai Championship, and a silver medal in the World IFMA Muay Thai Championship in 2009.

With over 200 amateur muay thai bouts and a professional muay thai record of 29-4, you already know what to expect from “Ataman” when the cage door closes.

Converting to MMA in 2015 saw Fiziev further extend his muay thai skillset by moving to the world-renowned Tiger Muay Thai & MMA gym in Phuket, Thailand.

With the concoction of muay thai and MMA honed, Fiziev is now 3-years deep into his UFC career with a 4-fight win streak behind him heading into this Saturday’s co-main event.

  • Age: 30
  • Height: 5'7"
  • Reach: 71.3"
  • Training Out Of: City Kickboxing

Living up to the expectations of fight critics hasn’t fazed New Zealand’s own Brad Riddell. With teammates such as Israel Adesanya, Dan Hooker, and Kai-Kara France leading the way for City Kickboxing gym before Riddell made his eventual debut for the UFC.

Riddell has kickstarted his UFC tenure with a 4-0 record, but not without a wealth of kickboxing experience to assist him. Riddell has competed in over 60 kickboxing bouts, including a world-famous victory over John Wayne Parr. He’s also competed in muay thai bouts, and interestingly the New Zealander has trained at Tiger Muay Thai, where his weekend opponent currently abides.

With several kickboxing championships in the bag, Riddell stumbled upon MMA by initially believing he was attending a muay thai bout. His accidental arrival into martial arts has now led Riddell into the world’s biggest promotion and a 10-1 record to show for it.

Fiziev fight style and how can Fiziev beat Riddell?

We can be almost certain that the weekend’s co-main event will provide a striking war of the ages. With two high-level strikers going toe-to-toe, it's unlikely we’ll witness a grappling-based game plan from either man.

Fiziev predominantly attacks with his muay thai style base, excellent switch kicks and high and low head kicks are often thrown with immense speed.

Moving forward, Fiziev should find success in delivering more output and in defensive/positioning terms, he has excellent lateral movement. And in a contest where I anticipate a 3-round war, it's going to come down to the wire with output dictating the winner.

Riddell fight style and how can Riddell beat Fiziev?

In one of the most challenging fights, I’ve ever had to analyze, finding the critical advantages for each striking-based fighter wasn’t a simple task. With that said, I think we can hand Riddell the power and defensive skill advantage.

Riddell delivers fewer kicks than Fiziev, but his boxing is more proficient – especially inside the pocket when a firefight is going down.

Rafael Fiziev vs. Brad Riddell Betting Picks and UFC Vegas Odds

The available odds at Bookmakers Review slightly favor Fiziev, but I genuinely find it complicated to put faith in either fighter. They’re both elite-level strikers with vital attributes in different areas.

Fiziev will own the speed and kicking advantage, whilst I believe Riddell has power and durability on his side.

Hesitantly, I’m going to side with Rafael Fiziev taking a unanimous decision for our UFC pick. I can envision the speed and output of Fiziev giving him a slight advantage on the judges’ scorecards.
