The second round is here at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. So far, it’s been an exciting tournament with some major upsets and a couple of surprising withdrawals. Regardless, the players remaining are fighting hard for their chance at glory. Let’s break down the ATP odds of this primetime matchup to find another winning tennis pick

Andy Murray vs. John Isner

Wednesday, June 29, 2022 – 11:45 AM EDT at Centre Court

One of the best British players in the world takes on one of the best American players in the world when Andy Murray and John Isner face off. Let's take a look at these two players and how they match up.

John Isner Player Profile

John Isner is a 37-year-old American ranked 24th in the world. Isner did not play any grass-court tournaments in the lead-up to Wimbledon. Also, Isner struggled in a 5 set battle in the first round against Enzo Couacaud, who is ranked number 206 in the world.

Isner's play has declined in recent years, as the age is starting to take effect and it looks apparent. Isner has less stamina in rallies and struggles to put together multiple good performances in tournaments.

John Isner Stats

  • Isner has one of the most powerful serves on tour. Isner holds at above a 90% rate, but unfortunately, he breaks at less than a 10% rate
  • Due to Isner's great serve but below-average return, many of his sets go to tiebreaks.
  • Isner's play has declined in recent years, as the age is starting to take effect and it looks apparent. Isner has less stamina in rallies and struggles to put together multiple good performances in tournaments.
  • Isner can still trouble anybody because his serve is almost unreturnable when he is playing well.

Andy Murray Player Profile

Andy Murray is a 35-year-old British player ranked 51 in the world. Murray is a grinder and he is known for his fitness and willingness to play long rallies. He has incredibly consistent groundstrokes but also possesses the power to take advantage of weak returns.

Murray is on his second shot at a career. A hip injury in 2018 forced him to retire. Murray has fought hard to make his return in 2021. He is not the same player that he was at his peak, but he can still show flashes of the brilliance that led him to be one of the top players in the men's game.

Murray is a former Grand Slam champion and was once considered part of the big four, the four players on the ATP tour that dominated tennis including Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic

Andy Murray Highlights

  • Murray won Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016.
  • Andy Murray is 8-2 on grass this season.
  • Murray won his first-round match against James Duckworth in 4 sets. After losing the first set, Murray won the next 3 sets in a routine fashion.

Murray vs. Isner Player Matchup

Let's take a look at the strength and weaknesses of each player and how they will match up.

  • John Isner has the better serve.
  • Andy Murray has a much better return of serve.
  • Murray has much more solid and consistent groundstrokes.
  • Murray has much better court coverage and is a much better defender.
  • Murray will have the advantage in any prolonged rallies.
  • If Murray can get breaks against Isner, he will win easily.
  • Isner's best strategy is to hold serve in order to get a tiebreak and then steal the set that way.
  • For Murray, the longer rally goes the more advantage he has. Murray will simply need to keep the ball in play in order to get the victory

Murray vs. Isner Best Bet

Although both players are older, John Isner is definitely on the last leg of his career. Andy Murray is coming back from the hip injury, but his level of play has been much higher than Isner’s, who is definitely suffering the effects of age.

Even when both men were in their prime, Andy Murray had the advantage over John Isner. Andy Murray is 9-0 against Isner. All these matches took place before 2016.

As mentioned earlier, Isner is not playing better now than he was then, so it is hard to see Isner finally snapping his losing streak to the great British player.

Andy Murray will once again get a decisive victory over the American who he has faced so often. I expect Andy Murray to do well, even if Isner is able to force this match into multiple tiebreaks.

Andy Murray has a nice draw here, playing a John Isner that is not the same player that he was 2 to 3 years ago. This is a great matchup for Andy Murray. Our bet for today's Wimbledon event is Andy Murray -4 games available at BMR's top-rated sportsbooks and betting sites.
