Serena Williams may have retired, but the next heir apparent to tennis greatness is on the court today.

Teenage sensation Coco Gauff will take on Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinals of the US Open. Let’s take a look at these two great players to find another winning WTA pick.

Coco Gauff and Caroline Garcia have both rolled through their sections of the draw so far.

Coco Gauff Player Profile

  • 18 year old American player ranked number 12 in the world.
  • Plays right handed with a two handed backhand.
  • Won two WTA titles in her career.
  • Was a finalist in the French Open this year.
  • Has not lost a set so far here at the US Open.

Player Analysis

Gauff has all the tools to be a top player in the WTA for the next decade. She is one of the quickest players on tour and plays excellent defense. She also has one of the fastest serves on tour.

Her two major weaknesses are consistency on the forehand side and second serve. Gauff has an incredible backhand that plays to an advantage in most rallies, but her forehand can be inconsistent.

Coco also struggles to get her second serve in and double faults in key moments have been an issue for her in the past. Gauff is 100% focused on tennis and makes major improvements every off-season. She is poised to take over the tennis world.

Caroline Garcia Player Profile

  • 28 year old French player ranked number 17 in the world.
  • Plays right handed with a two handed backhand.
  • Has won 10 titles in her career.
  • Won the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati and is on a 12 match winning streak.
  • Has not lost a set so far here at the US Open.

Player Analysis

Garcia's quarterfinal appearance this year matches her best Grand Slam result in her career. For her to make the semifinals will eclipse her quarterfinal appearance in the French Open in 2017 as her best Grand Slam result.

She always had the skills to be the top player but mental malaise and problems with her coaching led to a prolonged slump from 2019 to 2021. Garcia has switched coaches and is now finding the form that everyone expected of her when she burst onto the scene 7 years ago.

Caroline has an excellent serve and backs it up well. Her hold percentage of 79% is one of the highest on the WTA tour. She is an accomplished doubles player and has won Grand Slam tournaments in doubles events. This makes her an excellent net player. She has incredible reflexes and crisp, precise volleys.

Player Matchup

Coco Gauff has the more impressive serve, but Caroline Garcia is a veteran and uses her serve to win points more effectively, even if she doesn't rack up as many aces. Also, Gauff has the advantage in quickness and court coverage; she is the best defensive player.

Caroline Garcia is more consistent off the forehand side and has the better forehand, but Coco Gauff is more consistent on the backhand side and has a better backhand. Although Gauff made the finals in the French Open, I would say the experience is about even due to Caroline Garcia's many years on the tour.

Following the WTA odds, Gauff is a fan favorite at the US Open and will have the support of the raucous crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

WTP Best Pick

This match could easily be the final. Two of the top players on tour face off. Neither woman has lost a set so far here at the US Open. Caroline Garcia comes into the match on a 12 match winning streak. That will be put to the test against the young, feisty American.

I like Coco Gauff to get the win here. Although Garcia's recent results have been so impressive, I like Gauff's ability to play defense to put Caroline to the test.

Gauff’s ability to turn into a wall and get every ball back could frustrate Garcia. Also, Gauff has been playing well in the big moments and has shown that she is ready for the big stage.

Although Serena Williams is gone, the next great American is here. Our bet for tonight's US Open quarterfinal is Coco Gauff ML.
