Iga Swiatek vs. Jessica Pegula

Wednesday, September 7, 2022 – 07:00 PM EDT at Arthur Ashe Stadium

The best women's tennis player in the world takes on a popular American in great form when Iga Swiatek faces Jessica Pegula. Will Pegula's torrid streak continue and allow her to upset the world number one?

Both players have excellent serves. It is hard to decide who has the advantage here, both women are in the upper echelon of servers in the WTA.

Iga Swiatek Profile

  • Has more experience and has won multiple Grand Slams and is tested at the highest level of play.
  • Is the most consistent player.
  • Plays excellent defense and has more lateral quickness and court coverage.

Iga Swiatek Analysis

Swiatek is not a fan of the balls used here at the US Open; they are lighter than the balls typically used by the WTA and she has had some problems adjusting to the lighter balls.

She hits with power and she would prefer to have the men’s ball that lends itself well to her more powerful swinging style.

The Polish plays with more variety; she likes to change pace and uses different spins and slices in order to keep her opponent off balance. On the other hand, Pegula prefers a more straightforward, aggressive style.

Swiatek is coming off a 3 set win over Julie Niemeier. She started slowly before cruising to a 6-0 victory in the 3rd set.

Jessica Pegula Profile

  • Is the most aggressive player.
  • Prefers an attacking style of tennis and will look to end points quickly.

Jessica Pegula Analysis

Pegula will have a home court advantage, she is a native of New York and her family owns the Buffalo Bills. Pegula will have plenty of fan support in the match.

She had no problems in her win over former Grand Slam Champion Petra Kvitova. The American easily won 6-3, 6-2.

However, Kvitova also plays an aggressive, attacking style and Swiatek will offer completely different challenges than Kvitova.

Pegula knows she needs to avoid long, drawn-out rallies against Swiatek.

WTP Best Pick

Iga Swiatek is a more than two-to-one favorite in the WTA odds. I considered the Over here, as Pegula has a serve that is strong enough to push this number over the total. But in the end, I think Swiatek's well-rounded blend of power and defense will be too much for the upstart American.

Pegula has been playing well, but when Swiatek plays her best she is on a completely different level of tennis.

Her opponents have not excelled in the style that Swiatek plays. She has faced mostly power players so far and Swiatek's defensive acumen will be too much for her to handle. Swiatek will win and win by margin.

Our bet for today's quarterfinal match is Iga Swiatek -3.5 games.

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Jannik Sinner

Wednesday, September 7, 2022 - 07:00 PM EDT at Arthur Ashe Stadium

The new generation is finally ready to take center stage of the ATP Tour as 21-year-old Jannik Sinner takes on 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz for a spot in the US Open Semifinals. Which young player will end his year on a career high note?

Both players are excellent defensive players. I give Alcaraz the slight edge in defensive ability, but it is by a small margin. Moreover, Alcaraz and Sinner have a very strong serve; both hold at around 85%.

Both have an excellent forehand. Alcaraz might be slightly better, but it's really close.

Carlos Alcaraz Analysis

Carlos Alcaraz is better on the return of serve, he breaks at about 30% while Sinner only breaks at around 25%. The Spaniard has a much better backhand; he will have an advantage in backhand to backhand cross-court rallies.

Although Alcaraz is younger, he has more experience in high profile matches. He has been dealing with high expectations for the past year since the Spanish media proclaimed him the heir to the throne of Nadal.

Alcaraz has won their only previous match on a hard court, although it was an indoor court in Paris that plays relatively quick compared to the court in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Alcaraz is already a favorite amongst New Yorkers and will have the support of the crowd.

Jannik Sinner Analysis

Sinner has prevailed the last two times the men played. Sinner defeated Alcaraz in the final of Umag, on clay, and also defeated Alcaraz this season at Wimbledon.

Sinner has remained relatively under the radar as a top young player.

ATP Best Pick

I do think there is value on the Jannik Sinner money line. Sinner has shown the aptitude to beat Alcaraz this year and matches up really well against the young Spaniard. However, that is not the best bet you can make on this match.

The best bet for this match is the Over 39 games. Sinner will not be able to best Alcaraz in straight sets even if he wins. Our major concern would be if Sinner struggles, especially in backhand to backhand rallies.

I don't think that will be the case and I think we're in for a classic, long match. Two men that have gotten to know each other well in their young careers should give us an entertaining bout to end the quarterfinals.

Our best bet for the men's US Open quarterfinals is Carlos Alcaraz/Jannik Sinner Over 39 games.

ATP Pick: Carlos Alcaraz/Jannik Sinner Over 39 Games (-110) at Bookmaker
