The world’s top tennis players take the court in search of the semi-finals when the French Open continues its play today. Casper Ruud and Holger Rune are both in search of their first Grand Slam semi-final appearance.

Which up-and-coming player will make their breakthrough today? Let’s take a look at this match to find another winning tennis pick.

Casper Ruud vs. Holger Rune

Wednesday, June 01, 2022 – 02:45 PM EDT at Court Philippe-Chatrier

Casper Ruud Analysis

Casper Ruud is the eight-ranked player in the world. At age 23 he is the best player out of Norway and seems to only be getting better as he continues to work on his game and move up the rankings.

Ruud has won eight matches in a row, coming off a tournament victory in Geneva. He played well in Rome, eventually falling to world number one Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.

Still, Ruud had to be pleased with his performance in Rome, where he beat top players such as Botic van de Zandschulp, Jenson Brooksby, and Denis Shapovalov.

Ruud's Road to the Quarter-Finals

The Norwegian has had quite the interesting path to get to the quarter-finals today. He opened the tournament by defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in what was Tsonga's last match of his career, at home, in front of his fans.

It was an emotional event and Casper Ruud was very classy in the post-match interview making sure all the attention was put on the great career of Tsonga and not the win. What a way to start the tournament! Ruud then defeated Emil Ruusuvuori, Lorenzo Sonego, and most recently Hubert Hurkacz.

The win over Hurkacz was impressive as Hurkacz came into the match in very good form. Yet Ruud's clay-court prowess was on display. He put too many balls in play for Hurkacz to have an answer. Ruud’s consistency was the difference, and he is very good at putting power players to the test.

Holger Rune Analysis

Holger Rune is fairly new to the ATP scene. Rune turned pro in 2020 after being ranked #1 as a junior. He won 5 ITF titles and 5 Challenger titles before transitioning to the ATP tour full time.

Rune has won 2 ATP titles:

  • He won the BMW Open this season. He became the first Danish player to win an ATP title since 2005.
  • He then won in Munich during this clay season. His win here was his first victory at a Grand Slam event in his career.

Now he has a chance to make the semi-finals. Rune is soaring to the top of the tour. At only 19 years old, he has a great chance to be on top for the next decade.

Will there be a letdown effect for Rune after the biggest win of his professional career? That is certainly a possibility. It is tough to recuperate quickly after a physical and emotional win. Not only will Casper Ruud provide a tough test, but bouncing back to top form after the biggest win in his career will be a test for Rune as well.

Rune's Road to the Quarter-Finals

Holger Rune is finding the best form of his career here at the French Open. The nineteen-year-old from Denmark has so much potential and is finally living up to it here at this tournament. Rune has a bright future ahead of him, and he can make an even bigger mark by becoming a semi-finalist as just a teenager.

Rune has two excellent high-profile wins so far in this tournament. The first being over Denis Shapovalov in Round 1, and the second defeating last year's finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas to make the quarter-finals.

Tsitsipas came into the match playing great tennis, and for Rune to dispatch him easily in 4 sets showed the excellent level of play that he currently possesses.

Who Won the Last Time They Met?

Casper Ruud and Holger Rune played once on the Road to Roland Garros. Ruud defeated Holger Rune in the tournament in Monte Carlo.

Ruud has defeated Rune the three times that they have played. Still, it could be argued that Rune is in better form than he was at the beginning of the clay season, especially building off the momentum that he built in Munich.

Ruud vs. Rune: Pick and Prediction

Following the ATP odds, our play for tomorrow's French Open quarter-final is Casper Ruud -4 games. Rune is playing his best tennis, but Ruud's style matches up with him so well.

While Rune can dial up more power, Casper Ruud absorbs power quite easily and is not fazed when his opponent is outhitting him. Rather, Ruud relies on tactics, consistency, and court position in order to get the victory.

Because he will not be flustered by the high level that Rune brings, I believe that Ruud has a great advantage here.
