Tennis begins its first major tournament of the year with the Australian Open. There’s plenty of sun in Australia and the courts play quickly.
When looking at the tennis odds, which players should we bet on to make winning tennis bets? Let’s take a look.
Petra Kvitova vs. Sorana Cirstea
Monday, January 17, 2022 – 07:00 PM EST at John Cain Arena
Both of these talented women are off to a slow start down under. Both women are 1-2 in the lead-up to the Australian Open. Petra Kvitova lost to Priscilla Hon and Ons Jabeur, while securing a three-set win over Arantxa Rus. Sorana Cirstea opened her season with a dominant win over Varvara Gracheva but then lost in routine fashion to Amanda Anisimova and Ana Konjuh.
Petra Kvitova is a power player whose style should play well in Australia. One thing to be concerned about with Kvitova is that she does have asthma and has sometimes struggled with the heavy heat and humidity. Kvitova is a much better player to bet on if she's playing early in the morning or at night.
Sorana Cirstea is a player that really made a breakthrough, especially on hard courts, last season. Cirstea has a strong baseline game and can hit winners off of both sides. Cirstea does not have the dominating serve in the manner that Kvitova does, but she can still hold her own in her service games.
Petra Kvitova has a penchant for going 3 in her wins, earning her the nickname "P3tra". I believe that will be the case here tonight. I do believe that Cirstea also has some value on the money line, but the over is the best play. Our first bet for the Australian Open 2022 is over 21 games in the Petra Kvitova vs. Sorana Cirstea matchup.
Alexei Popyrin vs. Arthur Rinderknech
Monday, January 17, 2022 - 11:30 PM EST at Court 3
Arthur Rinderknech had a breakthrough season last year and now is firmly planted on the ATP main tour. Rinderknech is coming off a strong week in Adelaide where he lost in a three-set battle in the final to Thanasi Kokkinakis. Rinderknech accrued impressive victories over the likes of Mackenzie McDonald, Soonwoo Kwon, and Corentin Moutet on the way to the final. Rinderknech is playing excellent tennis and should be poised for a nice run here at the first major of the season.
It's always tough going against the Australians at home. Australian Alexei Popyrin definitely has a big serve that suits itself well to this quick surface. Popyrin is 1-2 to start the season with a win over Stefano Travaglia but then losses to Tallon Griekspoor and Pedro Martinez. I don't think Popyrin is playing his best tennis right now and this will be a tough task going against a player in fine form.
Rinderknech is still being a little undervalued by the top sportsbooks due to his recent ascension as a tour-level player. We will take advantage of him being undervalued in the ATP odds to make our second bet of the day.
ATP Pick: Arthur Rinderknech to Win ML (-134) at Bovada
Sloane Stephens vs. Emma Raducanu
Tuesday, January 18, 2022 - 05:00 AM EST at Margaret Court Arena
Two former US Open Champions collide. Sloane Stephens won in 2017 and Emma Raducanu is the defending US Open champion. Raducanu has been the darling of the British media and spent the offseason on a tour of success. From gracing magazine covers to headlining fashion shows it seems like Raducanu has done everything this offseason.
Sloane Stephens did not have a quiet offseason either. She was recently married to soccer star Jozy Altidore. This will be an interesting match between two women who had a lot going on during their off-season.
I do believe that Sloane Stephens is the more talented tennis player but it will be interesting to see if her lack of practice comes back to bite her in the tournament. I think Stephens has more athleticism and can dial up more power. Unfortunately, she can be very inconsistent or not always play to her highest potential.
Raducanu definitely played at her highest potential to win the US Open. Since her win at the US Open however she is a disappointing 2-4, including her first loss this season a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Elena Rybakina. Raducanu needs to prove whether or not she was just a flash in the pan or she can continue the success consistently.
She will definitely have her work cut out for her against the inconsistent yet sometimes brilliant Stephens.
With the form being so hard to judge with neither woman really playing a lot of tennis going into this tournament, I'm going to go for the player who I believe to be more talented, Sloane Stephens. Sloane Stephens has an all-court game and she can play offensive or defensive.
I believe she will truly choose to be the counter-puncher against Emma. Unless Raducanu plays at the high level she hasn't reached since the US Open, I believe that Sloane will be able to find her weaknesses and coax errors out of Emma. Our last tennis pick for the first round of the Australian Open is Sloane Stephens to win.
WTA Pick: Sloane Stephens to Win ML (-102) at Bovada
