The round-robin format is almost complete and the semifinal spots are up for grabs in today’s ATP finals matches. With the top players vying for a semifinal spot, which player should you wager on to make a winning tennis pick?

Hubert Hurkacz vs. Alexander Zverev

Thursday, November 18, 2021 – 08:00 AM EST at Centre Court

Alexander Zverev won in a walk-over against Marco Berrettini in his first match in the round-robin portion of the ATP Finals. He then lost a very tough match against his rival Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev was able to defeat Zverev 6-3, 6-7, 7-6. It was a tense match where Medvedev was fortunate to end up the victor.

Even with Zverev’s loss to Medvedev, Zverev is still a dark horse to win the title. Zverev can compete against the ATP elite and showed he can beat Djokovic at the big stage by getting the win in Tokyo at the Olympics. Wins like these have to raise Zverev’s confidence to shine in situations like these.

Zverev will now face Hubert Hurkacz with a spot in the semifinals on the line. Zverev needs to beat Hurkacz to advance to the semifinals. Hurkacz would need to defeat Zverev and for Daniil Medvedev to defeat Jannik Sinner. While Hurkacz’s path to the semi-final is a tough road, he is still not eliminated and will fight and give his all to win this match.

Hurkacz lost to Daniil Medvedev in his Opening match. He then lost to Jannik Sinner. Most players will be eliminated at 0-2. Due to the unusual circumstances here in Turin (because of Marco Berrettini’s withdrawal), Hurkacz is still alive. We know both players will give their all with the coveted semifinal spot on the line.

This match will feature 2 strong servers. Breaks will be at a premium as both men will be tough to break. While Zverev has the advantage in groundstrokes, Hurkacz’s serve is close to, if not equal to, Zverev’s serve. Both players will be blasting away and on the quick courts, this match seems primed to go over. This match will most likely see a tiebreak which also helps the over get home. In a tough match to handicap, the ML and game spread, the over is the right play.

Jannik Sinner vs. Daniil Medvedev

Thursday, November 18, 2021 - 03:00 PM EST at Centre Court

Jannik Sinner thought he was in for an easy payday in Turin as he qualified to be an alternate. Being an alternate can be lucrative for tennis players at the ATP Finals. Sinner was in line to make $100,000 just for being on-site during the tournament. Now he has a chance to make much more as he has an outside shot to make the semi-finals with a win today over Daniil Medvedev.

Sinner stepped in on short notice and round soundly defeated Hubert Hurkacz 6-2, 6-2. Sinner was opportunistic in his victory, converting 67% of his breakpoints (4/6) Sinner had an impressive 17 winners to 11 unforced errors. He was much stronger on serve, winning 64% of his service points compared to Hurkacz’s 49%. Sinner is an up-and-coming player and he is making the most of his opportunity here at the ATP Finals.

Daniil Medvedev has continued his breakout 2021 season with a strong showing here in Turin. He has won both matches so far, albeit in three sets. He has already clinched a semi-final spot here in Turin. Medvedev, of course, plays the power game of flat groundstrokes that works so well on this quick indoor hard court surface. Medvedev will be a challenge to any opponent if motivated.

Fortunately for Sinner, Medvedev may look past this match and have his eyes on his semifinal appearance. These matches with only one player having something on the line are tough to handicap but we will do our best.

I like the under in this match. The under protects us from the wildly variant play we could receive from Medvedev. If Sinner wins the first set, Medvedev will likely pack it in to get ready for his semifinal match (similar to the way Anett Kontaveit did against Garbine Muguruza when she had clinched her semifinal spot).

If Medvedev wins the first set, we will know he is here to play and will likely win in straight sets. The round-robin format is exciting, but it does put us in tough situations handicapping the ATP. This match is one of those situations. In a hard match to call, the under is the best play.
