Jessica Pegula vs. Barbora Krejcikova

Sunday, January 22, 2023 – 01:00 AM EST at John Cain Arena

Players Analysis

Jessica Pegula

The world's number three player, Jessica Pegula, takes on a tough opponent when she faces Barbora Krejcikova today. Pegula comes into the match on a seven-match win streak and has won 14 sets in a row. Her latest victory was a dominating win over Marta Kostyuk.

Pegula was fantastic in the match and only had nine unforced errors. She won 78% of her first serve points and saved 89% of her break points faced. It was one of the best performances in the tournament by any player.

Jessica Pegula is 4-0 in her career in the round of 16 at majors. Last year she qualified for the round of 16 twice, at Roland Garros and at the US Open. She will look to continue that streak today against a former Grand Slam champion.

She is a power player with above-average court coverage. The combination of speed and power has made her a ferocious opponent. Pegula's style is enhanced here in Australia where the quick surface makes it easier to hit through her opponents. She is definitely live to win this tournament with the form she has been displaying.

Barbora Krejcikova

Barbora Krejcikova has yet to drop a set so far here at the Australian Open. She is currently world number 23. She struggled with injuries last year which is why her ranking is so low. At one point she was world number two.

Krejcikova is a defensive player that is known for her clay-court prowess. She has excellent defensive ability. However, she lacks the power that Pegula has.

She is a strong net player, however, and she could use that to her advantage if she wants to switch things up against the hard-hitting American.

The Pick

This will be the first meeting between these two players. This will be a fun style matchup with the offensive-minded Pegula taking on the defensive specialist Krejcikova. This match being held on a quick hard court, however, favors the offensive player.

I like Jessica Pegula to continue her string of excellent play and get a win over one of the best players in the world.

She has displayed elite form and continues to get better each and every outing, and will use her power to hit through Barbora Krejcikova and end points quickly. Following the WTA odds, our first bet for today is Jessica Pegula -3.5 games.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Jannik Sinner

Sunday, January 22, 2023 - 03:00 AM EST at Rod Laver Arena

Players Analysis

Stefanos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas has yet to drop a set here at the Australian Open. Tsitsipas struggled with an elbow injury last year but now he looks to be fully healthy and the results have shown that.

In his round three win over Tallon Griekspoor, Tsitsipas landed 64% of his first serves and won 81% of his first serve points. He only faced one break point, which he saved.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is known for his solid groundstroke play, but his improved serve has made him a threat here on the quick courts of Australia. Tsitsipas' ability to blast down serves has made it very hard to break him. With this added dimension to his offensive game, he is now a threat to win the tournament.

Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner comes into the match off of a five-set battle over Marton Fucsovic. Sinner controlled the match in the end with a 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 victory. It was like two matches in one. After the first two sets, Sinner took over and steamrolled his opponent.

The Pick

Sinner and Tsitsipas have played five times with Tsitsipas leading the head-to-head 4-1. They met in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open last year. Tsitsipas prevailed 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. I expect a similar result today as Tsitsipas' improved serve and good health make him a formidable matchup for Sinner today.

Both these men prefer the clay courts but I believe Tsitsipas' style lends itself to the hard court surface. In his current form, it's hard to go against the Greek star who has had success against Sinner in this tournament before. Following the ATP odds, our second bet for today is Stefanos Tsitsipas -4 games.

ATP Pick: Stefanos Tsitsipas -4 Games (-102) at Bookmaker
