The ATP and WTA tours continue indoors in Europe. The ATP is holding an event in Stockholm while the WTA is being featured this week in Linz. While the players are lesser-known, the matches are still exciting. Let’s look at the board of ATP odds and look for a winning ATP pick.
Alexander Bublik vs. Arthur Rinderknech
Tuesday, November 09, 2021 – 08:00 AM EST at Center Court
Alexander Bublik and Arthur Rinderknech will both be looking for a strong showing here in Stockholm to finish their season on the right note. These ranking points will be helpful to both players as they attempt to avoid qualifying at the bigger events next season. Neither player comes into this match in their best form, which definitely makes this an interesting handicap.
Arthur Rinderknech has an impressive 51-28 record on tour this year. He is 24-13 on indoor hard courts. Rinderknech played many challenger tournaments this season to help build this impressive record. Yet building off this season's success, he will probably play a majority of ATP tour-level events in 2022.
For Rinderknech to be able to play consistently at the ATP level, he will need to get victories in matches such as these. But this will not be an easy task going against the seasoned Alexander Bublik.
Bublik comes into this match with a record of 33-28. He is 8-6 on indoor hard courts this season. He got a three-set opening-round victory over Dan Evans in the Rolex Paris 1000 Masters tournament last week. He then fell in his next match to the formidable Casper Ruud. Bublik has played well this season but is coming into this match in mediocre form by his standards.
Rinderknech will be looking to break a three-match losing streak. His most recent outing was when he lost to Hugo Gaston in Paris. Rinderknech will be looking to turn this streak around and has a great opportunity here in Stockholm.
Rinderknech is an up-and-coming player on tour that I'll be looking to back quite often this season. Yet here I think that he is being overestimated by the current ATP odds. Of course, he has a great chance to win, but I am surprised to see him favored over Bublik, who has more experience playing at this level of the tour.
While this should be a close match and could go either way, the ATP odds dictate that the value is on Bublik. I believe his confidence and experience will win the day here in Stockholm.
Jasmine Paolini vs. Saisai Zhang
Tuesday, November 09, 2021 - 08:00 AM EST at Court 1
Jasmine Paolini is an exciting young Italian player that gives her all in every match. On a WTA tour that oftentimes is tough to predict motivation, we always know that we will get the best effort from Paolini. Paolini is small in stature but big in fight.
Paolini has a baseline-oriented game. She does not have the big serve that some of the other women on tour possess. She is a fighter and she will test her opponent's consistency. She will showcase her defensive abilities and take advantage of her opponent’s mistakes with a fierce powerful backhand.
Paolini has won four of their last five matches including an opening-round victory over Dayana Yastremska. Paolini handled Yastremska's power well and once again showed off her defensive prowess in the 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory. Paolini made the semifinals of her most recent tournament in Courmayeur, where she lost to the eventual champion Donna Vekic.
Saisai Zheng is a Chinese player who also prefers a defensive style of play. Zheng will not be hesitant to hit winners when given the opportunity but seems to be more comfortable as the counter puncher. In a matchup of two counter punchers, I wouldn't be surprised to see Zheng be the aggressor here.
Zheng also fell to Donna Vekic at the Courmayeur tournament, losing 6-3, 6-4. Zheng opened her tournament here in Linz with a strong win over the young French player Clara Burel, whom she beat 6-4 6-1.
In this match, I like Paolini's consistency and recent form to win the day. Paolini has been much improved as the season continues and she is finishing strong. I believe in this battle of 2 counter punchers, she will be more consistent and get the victory. My best bet for WTA is Jasmine Paolini on the moneyline.
