The ATP action continues on the quick-paced courts in Stockholm, Sweden. The WTA Finals kick off today, hosted in Guadalajara, Mexico. It will be a great day of tennis. Let’s find the winning tennis picks.

Dan Evans vs. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina

Wednesday, November 10, 2021 – 08:00 AM EST at Court 1

Dan Evans is a controversial British player with a big game. Evans has never been scared to flout the rules or speak his mind. Evans will attempt to turn around a three-match losing streak today in Stockholm.

Evans’ most recent losses have been to top players. He fell in three sets to Diego Schwartzman in Indian Wells. Evans definitely ran out of gas in this match as the final score was 5-7, 6-4, 6-0. He then lost to the up-and-coming youngster Carlos Alcaraz in Vienna 6-4, 6-3.

His most recent outing was a three-set loss in Paris to Alexander Bublik 2-6, 7-5, 7-5. This tournament in Stockholm represents Evans’ last chance to accrue valuable ranking points before the end of the 2021 season.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is a Spanish player who feels more comfortable on the clay. That doesn’t mean he can’t be a dangerous opponent on the indoor hard courts as evidenced by a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Mackenzie McDonald in round 1 here in Stockholm. Davidovich Fokina saved an impressive 92% of break points (11/12). Davidovich Fokina matched aggressive play with the good fortune to save multiple break points and grab the victory.

This matchup today favors Evans, but we do have to worry about a player like Evans’ motivation levels. Evans is prone to frustration mid-match and can pack it in if things are not going his way. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will definitely put this to the test, as his style of play requires his opponent to be on top of their game.

While this is a tough match to handicap, I will go with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina’s consistent attitude and level of play. The quicker surface should favor Evans’ game, but one has to wonder about the level of fight Evans will show in a less lucrative event. I would hope that in his last tournament of the year, Evans will give it his all. Still, Evans is vulnerable to the frustration that Davidovich Fokina could present. We will go with the player who will give 100% to win the match on the quick surface in Stockholm. I expect Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to win. My ATP pick will be Alejandro Davidovich Fokina money line.

Karolina Pliskova vs. Garbine Muguruza

Wednesday, November 10, 2021 - 08:30 PM EST at Estadio Tenis Akron

The WTA Finals starts off with a group stage, similar to the World Cup. The players will round-robin against each other and the top two with the most points in each group will advance to a single-elimination four-player bracket, seeded by the results of the group stage.

Like the World Cup, this provides an exciting start to the tournament. We get to see the various players matched against all types of styles. I am very excited about the WTA finals, so let’s dig into what should be a great match.

Karolina Pliskova and Garbine Muguruza have met 10 times, with Karolina Pliskova winning eight of these matches. However their most recent match was in 2019, and all the other results before that were from 2017 or earlier. So one must take the gaudy head-to-head record that favors Pliskova with a grain of salt. Muguruza has since moved on from her former coach Sam Sumyk.

Garbine seems to be in a much better place mentally with her new team. The results are showing. She is playing more consistently and freely this year. Muguruza has lost two of her last three, however. She will be looking to turn things around in the opening match of the WTA Finals in Guadalajara.

Karolina Pliskova has not played since Indian Wells, where she had a disappointing second-round loss to Beatriz Haddad Maia. Still, Pliskova had an excellent year. She is 35-18 in 2021. She went an impressive 21-11 on hard courts this season.

Pliskova has a big serve and a big forehand. She plays an ultra-aggressive style. She likes to blow opponents off the court with short points punctuated by big forehand winners. Garbine can play aggressively as well, but in this match, I think that she will assume the role of counter-puncher and be the defensive counterpart to Pliskova’s attacking nature. This should be an exciting contrast of styles.

I favor Pliskova to get it done here. She has been more consistent in 2021. Lately, Pliskova has had a relaxed nature to her game and is not tensing up in big moments like she used to. If she plays her best, the match will be on her racket and she should be able to overcome Garbine’s defensive strategies. I like Karolina Pliskova to get a win here to open the group stage of the WTA Finals.
