The Paris Masters rolls on as the top men’s tennis players in the world vie for valuable ATP ranking points. The slate is getting shorter, but the quality of play is increasing round by round. Which players should we back to make winning ATP picks?

Cameron Norrie vs. Taylor Fritz

Thursday, November 04, 2021 – 08:25 AM EDT at Court Central

Cam Norrie has cruised through the open first two rounds. He beat Federico Delbonis 6-2,6-1. He followed that up with a big win over Reilly Opelka 6-3, 6-4. Norrie has played three indoor events in 2021. In each of those tournaments, he was eliminated in the round of 16. Cam Norrie had the biggest tournament win of his career at another Masters 1000, winning the prestigious title in Indian Wells.

Norrie has fared quite well against Americans winning eight of his last nine. Norrie will try to make it 9 out of 10 when he takes on the big-serving Taylor Fritz. Taylor Fritz had an excellent showing in the second round, beating number 6 in the world Andrey Rublev. He defeated the in-form Russian player 7-5 7-6.

This follows up an excellent showing in Indian Wells, where he beat the world number 7 Matteo Berrettini. Fritz accompanied that success with a win over number 4 in the world Alexander Zverev. He fell short in the semi-final, but these results illustrate that these two men come into this match playing in their top form.

Fritz has always had a big serve. He was erratic in rallies in the past, but he has recently been very solid with his groundstrokes. Fritz is showing more patience in letting points develop. This newfound maturity has enabled him to have success against the top players. I will be taking Taylor Fritz at underdog at the betting odds to upset Cam Norrie.

Alexei Popyrin vs. James Duckworth

Thursday, November 04, 2021 - 06:00 AM EDT at Court 1

Two of Australia’s very best players will face off. Both will be giving their best effort as valuable ranking points are up for grabs. Alexei Popyrin has been the benefactor of good fortune this week in Paris. Popyrin lost in qualifying to Tommy Paul in three sets. Unfortunately, Jenson Brooksby withdrew (in a match I had written an article about here at Bookmaker Review, much to my dismay). He had the opportunity to enter the main draw against Alex de Minuar.

He then played Stefanos Tsitsipas who retired midway through the first set. It was another stroke of luck as a top player was removed from the draw. Popyrin has not been playing his best tennis recently. He has not had more than two victories in Main draw ATP tournaments twice in the last month.

James Duckworth has had a much smoother path to this tennis match. First, he beat Roberto Bautista-Agut who is the true grinder and never gives anyone an easy match. Then he beat Lorenzo Musetti, a respectable win. Duckworth was able to come through in the clutch. Both matches went three sets. Duckworth has fared well at earlier ATP Masters Tournaments this season. He made it to the round of 16 in Toronto.

While Poypyrin has the higher ceiling, Duckworth is definitely playing much better at the moment. I will be taking form over potential here and grabbing James Duckworth as a slight underdog.

Marcos Giron vs. Casper Ruud

Thursday, November 04, 2021 - 02:30 PM EDT at Court 1

Casper Ruud has looked very strong this tournament so far opening with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Alexander Bublik. Ruud has a fantastic record so far at ATP Masters 1000 tournaments this season, going 15-5. Ruud is currently number eight globally, but he faces a stiff challenge against the in-form Marcos Giron.

Marcos Giron had a very solid win at the start of the tournament beating Frances Tiafoe 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. In the second round, he then beat another top player, Diego Schwartzman 7-6, 7-6. Two impressive victories demonstrate how Giron has found the best form of his season here in Paris. Giron is currently ranked 57 in the world and is looking to make a strong climb up the rankings with continued success here in Paris.

Ruud is the proper favorite and will most likely win this match. Although I do believe the ATP odds are a little steep against him. We are getting a very generous +4 from the bookmakers. Giron can definitely hold serve, keep this match close, and maybe even steal a set or the victory! I'll be taking the game spread in this match of +4 for Marcos Giron.
