Portugal vs. Switzerland

Sunday, December 06, 2022 – 02:00 PM EST at Al Bayt Stadium

  • Both teams scored in 4 of Switzerland’s 5 games at Euro 2020
  • Portugal has scored in 9 consecutive World Cup fixtures
  • Portugal has been winless in tournament knockout phases since 2016

Switzerland to Wow the Crowds Once Again?

Switzerland fought back from a 2-1 deficit to the Serbians to finish this game 3-2 and book their position in the Round of 16 was potentially the best performance by any team in Qatar to date.

The Swiss team has won 3 of their last 6 meetings with Portugal, and this team looked excellent at the Euro 2020 competition. They’ll now face a Portuguese side that hasn’t won a knockout stage game since 2016 and with their effortless attacking prowess that’s been put on display in Qatar thus far, don’t if the Swiss team overcome their opponents on Tuesday.

Overrated Ronaldo Should Be Benched

From one of the best players in the world to an overrated old man playing beyond his prime years. This criticism of Cristiano Ronaldo may seem harsh, but his egotistical nature hasn’t assisted Portugal in Qatar. We believe this squad could perform at a higher rate without his presence.

Ronaldo has played 514 minutes in World Cup knockout stages and has failed to net a single goal. He isn’t the clinical goalscorer we once knew and has looked mediocre during Qatar 2022, as his younger teammates are often overshadowed by his appearance.

Having failed to win any of their previous five knockout games in a World Cup competition, Portugal has notably lost four of these games on the bounce and could struggle to find confidence following their 2-1 defeat to South Korea.

Picks and Prediction

The top World Cup sportsbooks have Portugal as significant betting favorites, and I’m wondering why. In a popularity contest, Portugal win, but I wouldn’t confidently put my bankroll behind this time.

The double chance option (win or draw) on Switzerland is an attractive price and our best bet for this game that could go either way.

Score Prediction: Portugal 2 – Switzerland 2

Morocco vs. Spain

Sunday, December 06, 2022 - 10:00 AM EST at Education City Stadium

  • Morocco is undefeated in their previous four World Cup appearances
  • Spain lost to Japan and tied with Germany during their Qatar group stage games

An African Presence In the Round of 16

Following a set of distasteful performances by Belgium and Croatia, Morocco took advantage and claimed a surprise finish in Group F with seven points to their name. As one of two African teams to reach the Round of 16 alongside Senegal, Walid Regragui’s side has massively impressed and proved their continent shouldn’t be underestimated.

The Atlas Lions finished atop Group F with three excellent performances. While they would have preferred a meeting with Japan in the Round of 16, the Spaniards couldn’t prevail as group leaders and will prove a formidable opponent for Regragui’s men.

However, Morocco will enter this fixture with confidence after holding 2018 runners-up Croatia to a tie game, followed by a 2-0 success over the highest-ranked European squad in Qatar. Spain will naturally be the betting favorite based on reputation alone, but as we’ve already learned at this tournament, the lower-ranked teams shouldn’t be counted out.

Take a Chance On Morocco

Spain’s inability to create goal-scoring opportunities against Japan was a concern. The Spanish squad had 82% possession of the ball versus the Blue Samurai but couldn’t convert this possessive dominance.

The red flags have been waved since their opening 7-0 dismantling of Costa Rica and to completely trust Spain with our bankroll isn’t justifiable yet.

Pick and Prediction

The available World Cup odds at Bookmakers Review have placed Morocco with a staggering +500 moneyline. This price isn’t representative of their success in Qatar thus far, and because of this excellent set of odds, we can back the double chance market for some added insurance.

Morocco to win or draw within 90 minutes at +121 is an absolute steal when we consider the unpredictable performances that Spain has displayed during the World Cup group stage. We understand that Spain is an unstoppable attacking threat once they find momentum.

However, as this has been demonstrated in only one of their three games in Qatar, taking the value on Morocco feels like the rightful betting position.

Score Prediction: Morocco 1 – Spain 1
