It’s not quite the glamour of the champions league but we still all have a soft spot for the Europa League (although I did like the previous version called the UEFA cup much better). We have some fantastic teams in this year’s tournament, teams such as Leicester City, Lazio, West Ham, Celtic, Napoli, Monaco, Rangers, etc. The list goes on. It’s time to delve into this week’s matchday 1 card.
Lazio Rome vs. Galatasaray Istanbul
Thursday, September 16, 2021 – 12:45 PM EDT at Olympic Stadium
Galatasaray have been super strong on home soil during their Europa League competition openers having never failed to get on the scoreboard. Although Lazio has not been the best of travelers in the Europa League in the past they will fancy their chances here against a weakened Galatasaray side who are missing 4 players, potentially 6.
We see this game having goals as Lazio games tend to be high scoring, and when we look at the host's previous 5 games, all of them have seen over 2.5 goals. We are currently looking at odds of -130 for this game to hit three goals, we expect this could possibly be bet into as low as -175 come kick-off time so lock this one is early.
Celtic Glasgow vs. Real Betis Seville
Thursday, September 16, 2021 - 12:45 PM EDT at Celtic Park
The Spanish home side will be a difficult first trip for Celtic as they have only allowed an xG of 0.98 against this season, Celtic will struggle to create many chances in this fixture. Furthermore Celtic will be missing five players for the trip to Spain.
When looking at the Celtics record against Spanish opposition in the Europa League away from home it doesn’t bode well for their chances with a total of 15 defeats and 3 draws. Although domestically Betis have not won on home soil this season, we believe they will break the duck on Thursday night against Celtic and we are taking them to win at -130 Europa League betting odds. It won’t be a high-scoring affair either we believe, Betis 1-0 or 2-0.
Sparta Prague vs. Broendby IF
Thursday, September 16, 2021 - 03:00 PM EDT at Brøndby Stadium
It’s been a poor start to the season for Danish champions Brøndby with only one domestic win from eight. Elsewhere this is their first appearance in the Europa League group stage since 2015 having failed to get this far in eleven previous occasions. Opponents Sparta Prague have a long European history and fans will expect a strong showing away from home here.
This game screams draw, it’s more of a gut instinct play but we can see these canceling each other out in a score draw, 1-1 seems like the most likely score and can be bet at odds of +500. Our official best bet is to take the full-time draw as we see value in the +230, it also covers the second most likely scoreline of 0-0. A second bet which also ties into the draw and 1-1 correct score is betting on both teams to score at -125, 10 of Brøndby’s previous 11 Europa League home ties have seen this bet cash.
SSC Napoli vs. Leicester City
Thursday, September 16, 2021 - 03:00 PM EDT at Stadio San Paolo
Arguably the tie of the round sees Leicester City take on a very confident Napoli side after coming off a 2-1 win over Juventus and seeing their third win in a row. Leicester has failed to win two of their previous three games and will be more than likely happy to take a point in this game to Napoli. These teams have never been faced competitively before.
We view this game almost as the Brøndby and Prague matchup, we see both teams canceling each other out and settling for a draw, but we also think the score will finish 1-1. The 1-1 correct score Europa League odds is currently +700 with BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review). Officially we are going to go with the full-time draw as it covers the 0-0 or potential 2-2.
