Editor’s Note: The Udinese vs. Atalanta game was postponed due to COVID protocols in the Udinese squad.
The teams of Serie A are on a busy schedule this week as they have played Matchday 20 on Thursday and now they are playing Matchday 21 just three days later. We must be cautious approaching this set of games on Sunday as teams will most likely be resting players, dealing with injuries, and missing players due to COVID protocol.
Hopefully, most of our selections go ahead as there is a chance of some postponements with COVID issues. Most of this week’s selections are less stats-based and more value/gut plays based on the covid issues and quick turnaround from matchday 20.
We are not adding these plays to our official article stats and will play these for fun best bets as we are very wary of the COVID postponements, and games going ahead without key players.
Cagliari Calcio vs. Bologna FC
Sunday, January 09, 2022 – 08:30 AM EST at Unipol Domus
We are going out on a limb here that Cagliari can pick up a home win against Bologna. The home side is currently inside the relegation zone and only picked up 7 points from a total of 30. Cagliari has struggled big-time this season whilst Bologna sits mid-table in 10th place.
The home side is due to a win and is undefeated in their previous 5 home games against today's opponent. Our original selection here would be Cagliari +0.5 but we don’t see any value their at -140 so we are prepared to bet them for half a unit to claim their 4th win in a row on home soil against Bologna. Cagliari's only home wins this season was a 3-1 victory over Sampdoria.
Udinese vs. Atalanta BC
Sunday, January 09, 2022 - 10:30 AM EST at Dacia Arena
We expect to see some goals between high-flying Atalanta on the road and Udinese. Atalanta sits in 4th place; four points clear of 5th place Juventus. Udinese is 9 points clear of the relegation zone. Atalanta has seen over 2.5 goals scored in 7 of their 10 road games this season and even though they may still be missing Duvan Zapata, we still see plenty of goal-scoring ability in this side.
Udinese have seen exactly 50% of their home games go over 2.5 goals and these two teams have seen a lot of goals in their previous 10 meetings with an average of 3.5 goals per game, yes this is a game with a possibility of some key players missing and different styles compared to previous fixtures but at -125 we are happy to take a punt on this play.
AS Roma vs. Juventus Turin
Sunday, January 09, 2022 - 12:30 PM EST at Stadio Olimpico
We took Roma +0.5 away to a COVID riddled Ac Milan (which is yet to be played) and we are also more than happy to take them on home soil at +0.5 at betting odds of -130. Juventus are a tough side but have been playing below par this season and has only started to look better in recent games.
With that said, a road game three days after facing Napoli should have some effect on Juventus, we especially love the fact that Roma is just 2 points behind Juventus and José Mourinho will no doubt let his team know that and will expect a performance from them, even without English striker Tammy Abraham.
Serie A Pick: Roma +0.5 (-130) with BetOnline
Inter Milan vs. Lazio Roma
Sunday, January 09, 2022 - 02:45 PM EST at Giuseppe Meazza
Finally, Inter Milan will be hoping this game does go ahead after their meeting against Bologna was postponed on Thursday. Interestingly Lazio’s game was not canceled so we expect Inter Milan to have a lot of rest and lay down the hammer on Lazio here.
Lazio has just the 12th best away record in the league, whilst Inter Milan has the best home record. We expect the home side to win this one, maybe 2-0 / 3-0, worst case scenario 4-0 or 3-1 so take the under 4.5 and Inter Milan to win at -120.
Serie A Pick: Inter Milan win + Under 4.5 goals (-120)with BetOnline
