Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Houston Dynamo

Friday, August 05, 2022 – 10:30 PM EDT at BC Place

MLS Trends

  • Vancouver Whitecaps are unbeaten on home soil in 13 of their last 16 MLS games.
  • Vancouver Whitecaps have won just 1 of their last 7 MLS meetings.
  • Houston Dynamo's previous 7 MLS away games have produced under 2.5 goals.
  • Houston Dynamo concedes an average of 2.09 goals in their MLS away fixtures.
  • Houston Dynamo has won just 3 of their last 28 MLS away games.

Houston Dynamo Analysis

Houston Dynamo will want to forget last weekend's 6-0 dismantling at the hands of league leaders Philadelphia when heading to the BC Place Stadium this Friday night. Without a doubt, Paulo Nagamura will fancy his chances versus a lower level of opposition. Still, Vancouver isn't a pushover squad when playing on their home turf and a battle of two bottom dwellers is likely to ensue.

Embarrassing, shameful, and disgraceful were just a handful of the negative connotations used in reference to the Dynamo Houston squad last weekend, following a humiliating 6-0 loss that is now their biggest defeat in the club's history.

With only eleven fixtures remaining, it's a make-or-break situation for the Orange Crush, who's currently 11th in the Western Conference, six points shy of claiming a playoff position.

Vancouver Whitecaps Analysis

The Whitecaps looked sure to reach a playoff position in the MLS division following a successful month in June – maintaining a four-game unbeaten streak – but July's efforts have negatively affected their league position. Since losing to Minnesota United on July 9, Vanni Sartini's men have failed to get back on track.

Outside of their Canadian Championship success last month, the Caps are struggling to score goals while faltering with the opposing attacks put in front of them. They've conceded 3 goals in 2 of their previous 3 home games, including the lowest-scoring team in MLS, the Chicago Fire.

Vancouver vs. Houston: Odds and Prediction

The top-rated sportsbooks naturally favor the Caps as a +115 moneyline favorite. However, considering their recent poor form when playing at home, I remain hesitant to support such a low-valued betting line.

The Orange Crush will be desperate to rectify last weekend's embarrassment, and although both squads are struggling with results of late, we should expect an equal defensive commitment at each end of the field.

For the reasons mentioned above, I expect a low-scoring affair in Canada, and the available plus-money value on the under 2.5 goals market looks like a viable approach.

Score Prediction: Vancouver 1 - Houston 1

FC Cincinnati vs. Philadelphia Union

Saturday, August 06, 2022 - 07:30 PM EDT at TQL Stadium

MLS Trends

  • Philadelphia Union is unbeaten in 28 of their last 30 MLS home games
  • Philadelphia Union is undefeated at home in 12 consecutive MLS meetings
  • Philadelphia Union has scored at least 2 goals in their previous 4 MLS home games
  • FC Cincinnati have won just 8 of their last 48 MLS games

FC Cincinnati Analysis

A seven-game winless run for FC Cincinnati could be extended this Saturday as they're faced with the Eastern Conference's first-placed side Philadelphia Union.

Between Pat Noonan's men providing a 4-4 thriller tie with Inter Miami last time out and Philadelphia triumphant over Houston with a 6-0 scoreline, the two sides are equally presenting a goal-scoring threat heading into this weekends game.

Noonan and company haven't struggled with securing goals during the 2022 MLS season, but their current table position (9th) is evidence of a defensive structure failing to deliver the goods.

It must be frustrating for coach Noonan to witness his team land multiple four-goal games in a month, to give up an equal number of goals, and tie their games. And if anybody can take advantage of Cincinnati's defensive issues, league leaders Philadelphia are that team.

Philadelphia Union Analysis

Unlike their Saturday evening opponents, goal-laden performances have arrived in abundance for Jim Curtin and his Philadelphia Union squad as they've been equally impressive in defense.

Curtin's crop has netted 18 goals while conceding 2 during their current five-game win streak.

Cincinnati vs. Philadelphia: Odds and Prediction

The Major League Soccer betting odds naturally favor the most dominant team in the Western Conference, Philadelphia Union. We must also recognize FC Cincinnati's seven-game winless record against the league leaders.

Piercing the questionable defense the Orange and Blue present shouldn't be an issue for the Union. I expect their quest to become the conference champions will remain as a routine victory for the visiting squad is a likely outcome.

Score Prediction: Cincinnati 1 - Philadelphia 3
