RC Lens vs. Olympique Marseille

Saturday, January 22, 2022 – 3:00 PM EST at Stade Bollaert-Delelis

Lens traveled to Saint-Etienne last weekend and claimed all three points in a 2-1 victory away against the struggling hosts. Although the gulf in quality and class between Lens and Saint-Etienne is evident in the league’s table, the win wasn’t as straightforward as the soccer odds had it. Lens went down early and not until late in the second half did they finally equalize. Florian Sotoca gave Lens the equalizer in the 77th minute and in stoppage time Seko Fofana scored the winning goal to salvage the win.

On the heels of the victory, Lens improved to a 9-6-6 record and 33 points, keeping hope alive for European positioning at the end of the season. Lens is currently ranked seventh in the table and tied with sixth-placed Monaco (33 points). Only a point separates Lens from fifth-placed Rennes and two points separate them from fourth-placed Strasbourg.

The win marked Lens’ third-straight victory in all competitions, and second-straight victory in Ligue 1 action. Lens is 2-1-2 in their last five domestic fixtures overall, but they’re undefeated in their last five home fixtures (3-2-0).

Lens welcomes an in-form Olympique Marseille to Stade Bollaert-Delelis. The hosts won the last meeting between the sides 3-2 at Stade Orange Vélodrome in September. Florian Sotoca struck the first goal before the ten-minute mark on a penalty kick. Przemyslaw Frankowski and Wesley Saïd added the other two goals.

Olympique Marseille is coming off a 1-1 draw to Lille at the Vélodrome, extending their unbeaten streak to five straight in all competitions (3-2-0). In Ligue 1 action, Marseille is 2-2-1 while on the away they’re a stellar 4-1-0 in their last fixtures.

Going into Matchday 22, Marseille ranks third overall in the standings with a 10-7-3 mark and 37 points. They’re two points adrift of second-placed Nice and 13 points adrift of league-leading PSG, who has the Ligue 1 title all but sewn up.

By all accounts, this should be a stellar showdown between two sides with high aspirations this season of European competition. According to the top-rated sportsbooks, very little separates the pair in the betting and that could see these sides play out to the draw.

FC Nantes vs. FC Lorient

Sunday, January 23, 2022 - 9:00 AM EST Stade de La Beaujoire-Louis Fonteneau

Nantes and Lorient set up a fascinating showdown between two sides facing contrasting fortunes in Ligue 1. Both are coming off losses on Matchday 21, and they’ll be eager to get back on track this Sunday when they collide at Stade de la Beaujoire.

Nantes is coming off a 2-1 loss to Nice on the away. It marked their first defeat in the last five fixtures across all competitions (3-1-1) and second Ligue 1 fixture without a win. Before losing to Nice, Nantes settled on a scoreless draw to Monaco at home, bringing their home form to a 2-2-1 record in the last five.

Nantes currently ranks tenth in France’s top-flight with an 8-5-8 record and 29 points. They’re two points adrift of Montpellier (ninth) and one point clear of Lyon (11th).

Lorient can’t buy a win no matter how hard they try. They arrive at the doorstep of matchday 22 winless in 14 straight fixtures. To say they’re desperate to get into the win column is an understatement. Most recently, Lorient dropped a 3-1 decision on the way to Lille.

Lorient is sat pretty in the relegation zone with a woeful 3-8-10 mark and 17 points. They’re tied with Bordeaux on 17 points and sit a point 17th-ranked Clermont Foot. A win would go a long way to lifting Lorient out of the drop zone, but the soccer betting markets are stacked against the visitors, meaning it’s a longshot punt.

The last time these sides met, Nantes took the 1-0 win over Nantes in December. It was a closely contested game, and that might embolden the visitors. But would you bet on it?
