RC Strasbourg Alsace vs. AS Monaco FC

Saturday, August 06, 2022, 11:00 AM EDT at Stade de la Meinau

The Matchup

Strasbourg and Monaco are coming off solid seasons in which they finished inside the top half of the table. Strasbourg finished sixth – just outside of European spots – with a 17-12-9 mark and 63 points.

Monaco finished third overall behind a 20-9-9 mark and 69 points. They clinched a spot in Champions League action, meaning they’ll be facing the added pressure of playing in Europe’s top-flight club football competition too.

Encouraging Record

Strasbourg’s record against Monaco is encouraging and it should give Le Racing a measure of confidence as they kick off their 2022-23 campaign at home. Last season, they won their home fixture and drew on the away with Monaco, extending their unbeaten form against the Monégasques to three straight fixtures.

In addition, Le Racing are coming off an impressive 3-0 win over Liverpool in preseason warmup action. The win over the Premier League darlings capped off a preseason that finished on a 2-1-1 mark overall.

Monaco, however, is coming off a crucial 1-1 draw with PSV in Champions League action. Their preseason club friendlies resulted in a 1-1-2 mark.

The Betting Pick

Both sides will be keen to pick up from where they left off, but will they deliver? It’s the first weekend of top-flight football and anything can happen.

If the soccer odds were any indication, books open the betting with a coy market for this fascinating contest of potential Ligue 1 title contenders, as both sides are trading in plus money.

Where Is the Value?

Strasbourg has the slightest of edges at +164 over Monaco at +177 with Heritage Sports (visit our Heritage Sports Review), but it’s so nominal that it’s a moot point. That makes this a total toss-up bet for soccer picks.

To be fair, both sides present value in the betting. However, home advantage ultimately tips this towards the hosts. They can capitalize on Monaco’s conditioning after playing their first Champions League game on Tuesday.

Toulouse FC vs. OGC Nice

Sunday, August 07, 2022, 07:00 AM EDT at Stadium Municipal

The Matchup

Nice has high expectations after coming in fifth place in the league standings last year, with a 20-7-11 mark and 66 points. They narrowly missed clinching third place and, simultaneously, Champions League action, finishing three points adrift of Monaco. However, they’re looking ahead to Europa League action this season.

Newcomers Toulouse are keen to shake things up in Ligue 1. Toulouse earned promotion two years after being relegated into second-tier obscurity. They finished in second place in Ligue 2.

It’s not without some irony that things have come back full circle for Toulouse. They faced Nice in their last Ligue 1 fixture in 2020, losing 2-0 at home before being relegated. Of course, a lot of time has passed and a lot has changed as well, including club ownership.

The Betting Pick

Bookmakers appear to be projecting a very close contest here with both sides in plus money. Toulouse has home-field advantage, but they’re tipped as the underdogs across the sportsbook exchange with the best price of +189 available at Heritage Sports.

On the flip side, Les Aiglons are favored to win on the road, albeit they’re priced at +152 at the same online sportsbook. The draw, in the meanwhile, is tipped at the best price of +250 at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review).

All told, Nice is the better team – on paper. They should win on the road. However, as it is the first game of the season, it’s a total tossup. The draw might be the better bet overall.
