Although all 4 teams in Group E can still qualify for the knockout phase of the competition, it’s expected the 2 heavy favorites pre-tournament (Germany and Spain) will be the ones to do so on Thursday.

Here are our favorite Group E soccer picks for December 1st.

Costa Rica vs. Germany

Thursday, December 01, 2022 – 02:00 PM EST at Al Bayt Stadium

Game Preview

Germany has not impressed at all during this World Cup yet they still find themselves with a chance to qualify for the next round against a very beatable Costa Rican team, following a 1-1 tie last time against Spain. However, Japan put them in this predicament as they beat Germany 2-1 on matchday one.

Los Ticos are to be applauded for picking up all three points against Japan, but they only had 4 shots in the entire game and were defending in their own half for the majority of the soccer match.

A tie here would see Costa Rica advance but they would also need Spain to beat Japan in that scenario.

Germany is all but out of the competition if Japan were to beat Spain even if they pick up all three points in this matchup.

Game Prediction and Pick

  • Yes/No Both Teams to Score

Costa Rica was somewhat lucky to beat Japan last time out, and a 7-0 thumping from Spain on matchday one wasn’t exactly the way Los Ticos expected to start their World Cup.

Germany should look to control much of the ball here and it’s going to be difficult for Costa Rica to score if they don’t have the ball, they had just 18% possession in the game against Spain and we see a similar outcome in this matchup against Germany.

The Germans are looking to avoid finishing bottom of a World Cup group two tournaments in a row, we simply can’t see that happening and believe a win to nil is on the cards in this World Cup matchup.

We are betting both teams to score NO at -130, this also might cover the unlikely scenario that Germany doesn’t score but in general, we just feel Costa Rica will get little to no chances in this game.

Predicted Score: Costa Rica 0 - Germany 3

World Cup Pick: Both Teams to Score - No (-130) at the best World Cup sportsbooks

Japan vs. Spain

Thursday, December 01, 2022 - 02:00 PM EST at Khalifa International Stadium

Game Preview

Japan was shocked last time out when Costa Rica got the better of them 1-0. The Japanese had a qualification in their grasp, now they could still face elimination following a famous victory over Germany. Japan will have to pick up another famous result against Spain if they wish to advance into the last 16.

A win here would see Japan through, a defeat would guarantee their elimination and a tie would only see them through if the other game ends in a tie.

So far Spain looks like the best team in this tournament, almost every high-profile or pre-tournament favorite team has looked poor or played badly, etc, but not Spain.

As we stated before, they romped home to victory on matchday one scoring 7 goals and earning a respectable 1-1 tie against a very determined German team. Spain is one of the best teams in the World if not the entire World Cup at keeping possession of the football and controlling the pace of the game. We have been very impressed with them so far.

Game Prediction and Pick

  • Spain Asian Handicap

Span have won to nil in their previous 6 competitive victories, which is available to bet at top World Cup odds of +120.

That said we are liking Spain’s -1.0 Asian Handicap line at -135, if Spain wins by just one goal, we will receive a push but we are predicting another strong Spanish display and see them winning 2-0.

Japan will approach this game in a cautious manner as any team who exposes itself to Spain will become undone very quickly as Costa Rica found out the hard way.

Predicted Score: Japan 0 - Spain 2
