Italy vs. England

Friday, September 23, 2022 – 02:45 PM EDT at San Siro Stadium

Nations League Trends

  • Italy have won just 1 of their previous 8 games in all competitions
  • England are unbeaten in 43 of their last 48 away games in all competitions
  • England's last 7 Nations League games have seen under 2.5 goals scored

The Three Lions or the Three Pussy Cats?

Of course, we can't wholly judge Gareth Southgate and his England squad on their Nations League performances because this competition isn't of high importance.

However, losing two and drawing two has been an abysmal run for the Three Lions, who's rock bottom of the standings behind Hungary, Germany, and their Friday afternoon opponents Italy.

The Euro 2020 final upset where Italy overcame England in a penalty shootout is unquestionably fresh on the mind of Southgate and company; however, their first meeting with Italy in the Nations League provided a result that we're all too familiar with, a draw.

This Friday's meeting will be the third time these two squads have met in thirteen months, and the same trend has remained, a trend where little can separate the sides and a lack of goals has been present.

Disgruntled Italians

The Nations League will be the Italian's only hope of claiming more gold in 2022 as they failed to qualify for the World Cup.

This will have disgruntled the Italian squad that looked so impressive during the Euros, and they're likely to get up for this fixture more so than their English opponents.

With that said, and as past results have shown, I wouldn't expect a high-scoring encounter, and should the Italians squeeze out a victory, it would be by a small margin.

Italy vs. England: Odds and Prediction

The Nations League betting odds favor the visitors, but we should see this fixture as an experimental period for Southgate's men before they head into the World Cup competition.

This could certainly give Italy an advantage, but it's difficult to ignore the history of results between the two, and the goals market is what stands out.

Per usual, defensive systems will likely cancel each other out when these teams meet. For this reason, and because England has failed to score in 3 of their last 4 games, the under 2.5 goals is a wager I'm confident in placing.

Score Prediction: Italy 1 - England 1

Spain vs. Switzerland

Saturday, September 24, 2022 - 02:45 PM EDT at Estadio La Romareda

Nations League Trends

  • Spain are unbeaten at HT in 18 consecutive games in all competitions
  • Switzerland has won just 2 of their previous 12 Nations League meetings
  • Spain are undefeated in 33 of their last 36 games in all competitions

A Lack of Goals Expected in Spain

Spain, surprising to some, are sitting pretty at the top of their Nations League table following a rocky beginning that consisted of consecutive drawn fixtures against Portugal and the Czech Republic.

And now, the Spaniards will return to Zaragoza and compete in this region for the first time in nineteen years versus a Switzerland squad on the brink of relegation from their Nations League group.

But despite their Nations League group topping position, Luis Enrique's team isn't projecting a fearless Spanish threat that this nation has in past years.

Tight at the Back

Spain's lack of dominant goal scorers could appease a reformed Swiss defense.

Switzerland initially struggled to hold back the goals in the early stages of this tournament, but we've notably seen a change since then.

With the likes of Manuel Akanji, staying in form at a club level could prove challenging for Spain in the final third.

Neither side has managed to score more than one goal in the previous games they've faced one another, and this trend will likely continue on Saturday.

Spain vs. Switzerland: Odds and Prediction

To no surprise, the Nations League betting odds favor Spain, and I agree, but this fixture providing a lack of goals is the safest wager, making the under 2.5 goals an ideal betting position to be in.

Score Prediction: Spain 2 - Switzerland 2
