The Reigning Premier League Champions Manchester City travel to London on matchday 1 as they face a West Ham side who are far removed from the relegation-threatened ones of the past, and now, set their sights much higher having participated in the Europa League and even made it as far as the semifinals last season.

This won’t be a walk in the park for Manchester City, having failed to win their previous three road games away to West Ham.

Check out our European Banker of the Week in the Premier League at betting odds of -135.

West Ham United FC vs. Manchester City FC

Sunday, August 07, 2022 – 11:30 AM EDT at London Stadium

West Ham United Analysis

  • Will Big Spending Pay Off?

After reaching the Europa League semifinals and finishing 7th in the Premier League last season, the Hammers have added some squad depth after spending a total of 81 million thus far in the transfers market, whilst recouping zero of that in the departures zone.

The two most notable departures are long-term club legend Mark Noble who retired and 32-year-old Ukrainian winger Andriy Yarmolenko who left on a free.

The transfers brought in look very promising, especially ex-Sassuolo striker Gianluca Scamacca who scored 16 goals in 41 appearances for the Italian club. A promising young striker who should be able to get at least 6/7 goals in his debut campaign for the Hammers.

West Ham will face off against Viborg FF or Bóltfelagið 1936 Tórshavn later this month in the Europa Conference League qualifiers.

Manchester City Analysis

  • Hoping for a Strong Start

Manchester City will be hoping to start this campaign much stronger than the last as they were slow getting out of the gates in 2021/22 despite winning the league. And by slow we mean they still managed to win 6 of their opening 10 games, drawing twice and losing twice.

They held a 13-point lead over Liverpool at one point in the season but four draws and 1 loss in 9 games saw the Reds claw back to lose out on the league title by 1 point after a dramatic comeback on the final day of the season in which City clawed back a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 against Aston Villa.

Having now won 4 of the previous 5 English Premier Leagues it’s safe to say Man City are the outright favorites again this year at odds of -140 with the top-rated sportsbooks.

City has brought in some fresh faces to rejuvenate the team over the off-season with the likes of Erling Haaland and Kalvin Phillips having joined, as well as promising Julian Alvarez who was on loan last season at River Plate but now seems to be in Pep Guardiola’s plans for the team, especially after his goal in the Community Shield against Liverpool.

West Ham United vs. Manchester City: Odds Breakdown

The sportsbooks are very keen on Man City winning here as they are priced as low as -350 with some books, whilst the home team West Ham are set as high as +700 and the draw being made available to bet at +425.

Arguably the most appealing of the three is the draw as it’s hard to see City losing the opening game, and just as tough seeing West Ham winning here.

Keep an Eye on Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland is priced up to score anytime at around -140, which is probably going to be the norm for the season, unfortunately.

He does deserve these prices as he is arguably the best striker in Europe right now having netted 135 goals in 166 games between his time at Molde FK, Red Bull Salzburg, and Borussia Dortmund, all this at just 22 years old.

Interesting fact: No new signing has ever been top scorer in the Premier League in their first full season and Erling Haaland is priced as low as +275 to score the most goals this season, the outright favorite.

West Ham United vs. Manchester City: Betting Pick

This is a game we are very much looking forward to on Sunday. Haaland will be keen to get his first goal out of the way, especially after missing two very scorable chances against Liverpool in the Community Shield.

The first game of any new season is always tricky, and West Ham won’t lie down and roll over, especially having not lost to City for three games in a row at their home stadium. We expect City to win in a tightly contested match.

For our soccer picks, we are riding over 1.5 match goals and the Citizens (Man City) to see over 5.5 corners in the match at odds of -135.

  • Although we are laying some juice here, we love this selection as it's very hard to see this game going under 1.5 goals.
  • Man City have seen 9/9/10 corners in their previous three winless games at the London Stadium.

Predicted Score: West Ham United 1 - Manchester City 2

Soccer Pick: Man City Over 5.5 Corners + Over 1.5 Match Goals (-135) at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review)
