Costa Rica Soccer Analysis
20th Century Performance
Soccer has been the number one sport in Costa Rica for decades, and although most don't realize it, they were thriving long before the likes of the United States arrived on the CONCACAF scene.
CR debuted at the 1990 World Cup and became the 8th team from the CONCACAF region to reach the tournament's final stage.
Despite this being the only outing for Los Ticos, their footballing desire was first witnessed when they won the first-ever Gold Cup in 1963, lifting this trophy on three occasions before the United States ever did.
21st Century Performance
The 21st century has been a lot kinder to Costa Rica's tenure, as the team arrived in full force in Japan and South Korea in 2002 and Germany four years later. Despite losing in the group stages of these competitions, they were unfortunate to finish behind Turkey in 2002 on goal difference.
Their most memorable outing was at the 2014 edition in Brazil, as Los Ticos surprised the doubters and finished top of their group. Going on to defeat Greece in the round of 16 saw them reach the quarter-finals, but a penalty shootout versus the Netherlands would be their final outing.
Four years later, Costa Rica bowed out in Russia but interestingly, the likes of Bryan Oviedo, Celso Borges, and Bryan Ruiz remain in the squad for Qatar.
Costa Rica's Road to Qatar 2022
Los Ticos were unfortunate not to automatically qualify for Qatar 2022 as Canada, the United States, and Mexico sneaked into those tables' positions.
Goal difference was the game-changer in Costa Rica's automatic qualification. Still, they should be confident in defeating New Zealand following a 2-0 success over the USA in their last World Cup Qualifying game.
New Zealand Soccer Analysis
The Oceania Confederation was topped by the skills of Australia for many years, as New Zealand could rarely overcome the skillset of their Aussie neighbors.
When the Socceroos moved to the Asian Confederation for stiffer competition, the All Whites hoped to replace their success, but they've only quailed for one World Cup ever since.
Oddly, New Zealand didn't struggle to become the best team, they struggled for serious competition. Because the level of football is so low, they aren't accustomed to playing in competitive games, making it more difficult to adapt when reaching the inter-confederation playoffs.
Problems Outside Oceania
The All Whites are the most domineering team from Oceania, but they often fall victim to most teams outside of this region.
Thus, the best sportsbooks aren't giving them much respect against the fifth-best team from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean (Costa Rica).
Costa Rica vs. New Zealand: Betting Pick and Prediction
The betting odds favor Los Ticos, and it's hard to discriminate against this stance.
Failing to surpass the CONCACAF qualification stage will still be playing on the mind of Luis Fernando Suarez and his team. We should expect they'll be all guns blazing for this encounter after allowing goal difference to prevent them from automatic Qatar qualification.
High-scoring affairs aren't usually associated with Costa Rican games, so backing them to win this meeting with Under 3.5 goals is a nicely priced wager I can get behind.
Score Prediction: Costa Rica 2 - New Zealand 0
