Bundesliga matchday 18 is on the soccer betting card this weekend, and in this column, we preview some of the best soccer betting morsels on offer. We examine the Bundesliga odds and serve up picks to consider. So, without too much preamble, let’s just get right to it.
SC Freiburg vs. Arminia Bielefeld
Saturday, January 08, 2022 – 09:30 AM EST at Europa-Park Stadion
SC Freiburg entered the winter break following a 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen to improve to an 8-5-4 record and 29 points in Germany’s top-flight league. The victory lifted Freiburg into third place in the Bundesliga table. They’re five points behind second-place Borussia Dortmund and 14 points adrift of league-leading Bayern Munich.
Substitute Kevin Schade, a rising star in the game catching the attention of major European clubs, scored the late game-winner to lift his side to the 2-1 win at home over Leverkusen. The win saw Freiburg leapfrog Leverkusen in the table. As things currently stand, Freiburg has a one-point edge over Bayer Leverkusen in the table.
Christian Streich’s Freiburg went into the break with a modest 4-2-4 record in their last ten domestic fixtures. Across those, they netted 17 times for an average of 1.7 goals per game – although that number is largely skewed by a 6-0 drumming of Borussia Mönchengladbach on December 5.
Arminia Bielefeld couldn’t be enjoying more contrasting fortunes. They’re mired in the relegation battle at the bottom of the table after stringing together a 3-7-7 mark and 16 points through the first half of the season. They are a point behind 16th placed VfB Stuttgart and two points behind 15th ranked Augsburg.
On the bright side, Arminia went into the Christmas season riding a two-game winning streak with wins over VfL Bochum and RB Leipzig. Whether they can carry that form into the new year though remains to be seen.
Considering these two teams are currently enjoying wildly different prospects in Bundesliga, the top-rated sportsbooks are hardly surprising at all. The hosts are tipped as the considerable favorites and by all accounts, they should come through with a straightforward win.
Freiburg is unbeaten in 10 games of its last 12 home fixtures while Arminia sports three wins in its last 18 games. A win or a draw would represent an upset of significant proportions.
Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Borussia Dortmund
Saturday, January 08, 2022 - 12:30 PM EST at Deutsche Bank Park
Eintracht Frankfurt closed the first half of the season on a three-game winning streak, capping off their positive run of form with a 1-0 win over Mainz. On the heels of that triumph at home, Frankfurt finished with a 7-6-4 record and 27 points which put them inside the top six ahead of the holidays.
Eintracht Frankfurt sits a point behind fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen and two points behind third-placed SC Freiburg. Thus, the premium on the win on matchday 18 couldn’t be any greater.
However, given the quality of the opponent they’re slated to face, the soccer odds are stacked against them considerably, despite having home advantage in this contest.
Borussia Dortmund is flying high in the league and sitting pretty in second place with an 11-1-5 record and 34 points. There’s a big gap between Dortmund and Bundesliga leaders Bayern, who currently sport a 14-1-2 record and 43 points.
If Dortmund hopes to close the gap on Bayern and give them a run for their money down the stretch, a win in this game will go a long way.
Dortmund is loaded in talent, including Norwegian Erling Braut Haaland, who leads the attacking charge with 13 goals and is currently third in the Bundesliga’s top scorers table.
Haaland exploded the last time these two sides met on matchday 1 of the 2021-22 Bundesliga season. The Norwegian scored twice and set up two more goals as BVB defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 5-2.
Haaland’s stellar play has attracted the attention of Spanish giants Barcelona, amongst several other big-name clubs, and with transfer talks gathering pace, it remains to be seen how this developing story unfolds.
Dortmund went into the Christmas break on the heels of a disappointing 3-2 loss against Hertha BSC. That loss saw BVB slip to a 3-1-2 mark in their last five fixtures.
As they look to kickstart the second half of their campaign in German top-flight action, they’ll be keen to get a solid win in the books. The soccer odds aren’t cornered with Dortmund convincingly, suggesting there is the potential for an upset in this game or, even, a draw.
The idea is that Eintracht Frankfurt won’t be an easy task on the road. Plus, they’ll be keen to get revenge for their last meeting. Still, Dortmund, priced at a tempting +101 with Heritage Sports, is worth considering for soccer picks. That said, betting the total might be the best option.
Soccer Pick: Borussia Dortmund (+101) at Heritage Sports
