The first European final of the season takes place on Wednesday night as Frankfurt and Rangers head to the neutral venue of Sevilla’s stadium in Spain. Frankfurt are in their first European final since 1980 whilst Rangers last made a European final back in 2008 were they lost 2-0 to Zenit.

Both teams were unexpected to reach this stage of the tournament so we are expecting a tense atmosphere around the ground as both sets of fans will be eager to live a major trophy.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Glasgow Rangers FC

Wednesday, May 18, 2022 – 03:00 PM EDT at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán

Jekyll and Hyde Frankfurt

Frankfurt are like Jekyll and Hyde when it comes to their domestic form and Europa League form, the German side have not won in 8 games now back in the Bundesliga yet they are on a 3 game winning streak in the Europa League.

It’s not like Frankfurt had an easy route to the final either, knocking out both Spanish sides Real Betis and Barcelona as well as English side West Ham. All three teams were favored to oust the Germans. That said their fortunes in cup competition finals have not bode well for the club as they are 0-3 in their three previous finals.

Frankfurt fans can thank Ansgar Knauff and Rafael Santos Borre who have stepped up in a big way in the previous four games as they scored 5 of the teams previous 7 goals. A special mention for Japanese player Daichi Kamada who has scored 5 in 11 in the Europa League compared to 4 in 23 in the Bundesliga.

He can still finish top goalscorer of the competition but at the very least will need an unlikely hat trick. If you are feeling bold the odds are +12500

By the way Frankfurt are the only unbeaten team in this year’s competition, amazing for a team who has such subpar performances in their Domestic league.

Rangers Have a Lot of Fight

Rangers might have failed to defend their crown of the Scottish league this season but they can make amends and more by becoming the first Scottish team to win a Major European trophy inside the current Champions League / Europa League format and the first Scottish team to win a Major European trophy since Aberdeen in 1983.

Rangers have already laid waste to two German teams on route to this year’s final with a 4-1 win over RB Leipzig and a 6-4 win over Dortmund (combined scores over two games).

The Scottish outfit have proven their grit and fight time and time again and we easily predicted they would overcome RB Leipzig as underdogs of +350 to qualify. Interestingly Celtics last European final was back in 2003 at Sevilla’s home ground (although different stadium these days) as they lost 3-2 to Jose Mourinho’s Porto.

Keep an eye out for Rangers right-back James Tavernier who is the competition's top scorer with 7 goals from just 12 shots in total and all 7 goals have come in his previous 8 Europa League games. His odds at +433 to score anytime in the final looks a tad too big for a player in such hot form.

The Picks

We can’t understand why the top-rated sportsbooks have been so in favor of Frankfurt as the German side are -140 to lift the trophy compared to Rangers +120. We get that the Rangers have a few key players missing with injuries but it’s a final and anything can happen, plus the Rangers pretty much did it without them in the previous two rounds anyhow.

We are liking goals here and see extra time taking place. Both teams have been well able to prove they are capable of scoring as Rangers have scored in 10 of their 16 Europa League games this season and more importantly conceded in 11 of those 16.

Frankfurt have scored in 10 of their 12 games and they have conceded in 10 of their 12. Essentially Rangers should most likely score as almost every other team has, Frankfurt have proven their goalscoring ability so we predict a 1-1 here in a cagey affair, don’t be surprised to see 1-1 half time and 1-1 full time at Europa League final odds of +2500.

We think both teams to pick up over 1.5 cards at starting odds of -120 is very generous given it’s a final and both these teams have the 2nd and 4th worst discipline record in the competition. Our referee in charge also doesn’t mind a card with an average of 4.4 cards handed out in European tournaments this year.

Final Predicted Score: Eintracht Frankfurt 1-1 Rangers
