The Greg Norman-designed seaside track has been used for the Mayakoba Championship since its inception back in 2007. The golf course is an eclectic mix of Mexico’s ecosystem taking in the mangroves, dense forest, freshwater canals and the picturesque oceanfront.
This week sees one of the rarer green types at the tropical location of Playa Del Carmen when the players tackle, seashore Paspalum, a grainy type that demands more force rather than the silky touch demanded by most PGA Tour tracks.

Will Viktor Hovland Complete the Hat-Trick?
Viktor Hovland chases a third Mayakoba Championship this week in Mexico. Remarkably, his only two PGA Tour titles are here in South America while his form is trending nicely in recent weeks after a poor mid-year slump.
So, yes, Viktor Hovland looks more than capable of a third crown in succession, but the thing we have to weigh up as bettors is Hovland still has a value price of +1000 at Bovada (visit our Bovada Review).
Remember how well the twenty-five-year-old Hovland started 2022 that took him to world number #3 after a win in Dubai, which meant his slump for a few months in the middle of the year took us all by surprise.
Maybe it was the speculation around his short game being sub-standard that dragged his confidence down a little but in Mexico, those issues have never been a problem where you tend to be able to put a firmer strike on shots around the greens.
Slowly but surely, that confidence has been coming back since a good showing in the Open Championship and this week undoubtedly offers the young Norwegian superstar, currently ranked #11 in the world, has his optimum chance to win before the end of the year.
Hovland’s high level of consistency means a top-10 finish at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review) is a must-bet along with the win price.

Why Brendan Is Not on His Todd This Week?
We already discussed the merits of Viktor Hovland this week in Mexico, where his particular set of golf skills are seen in their best light.
Similarly, a former champion, Brendan Todd is supremely suited to golf in South America. Indeed, he was the 2019 champion before Hovland’s dominance began, but it’s important to point out, in the two years since he has been 8th and 11th illustrating his growing affinity for golf in these climbs.
As mentioned earlier, golf in this part of the world and its unique agronomy are not for everyone, but when they are your preferred conditions, it has the potential to be a worthwhile advantage.
Certainly, the thirty-seven-year-old from Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania is better than proficient and that 2019 win, I remember well as I tipped Todd at +12500 in my golf column having followed his travails on his comeback from the yips that derailed a promising career previously.
Normally, the Yips is a debilitating illness caused by nerves that undermine the message to the brain and affects most golfers on the greens, for Todd, unusually it affected him from the fairways with his long irons.
Happily, the Yips are consigned to a ‘thing of the past’ nowadays, and Todd’s world ranking just outside the top 100, illustrates how consistent his form has been in 2022, with the 7th place on his last start in the CJ Cup being his fourth top-10 finish in his last fifteen starts since the opening week of April.
Excuse my British Slang for being on one’s own, when I say Brendon is not on his Todd this week as a former champion with a fantastic chance of a second Mayakoba crown.
The best price for Brendan Todd is +5000 at Bovada so take that along with a meatier stake on a top-10 finish with BetOnline.

Take Hayden Buckley as This Week’s Long Shot
If Hayden Buckley wins this week’s World Wide Technology Mayakoba Championship as a long shot price of +8000 at Bovada it would not surprise me.
The second-season PGA Tour professional appears to play some of his best golf in ‘the fall’ of the year. His last start in Japan at the Zoso Championship saw him come 5th after two top-20 finishes before starting the new wrap-around season fast like last year.
This week sees Buckley make his course debut at Playa Del Carmen, but there’s plenty of encouragement and evidence on offer to believe he will be perfectly suited by playing conditions.
The Corales Puntacana Championship is played in the Dominican Republic under very similar conditions and a very particular group of players flourish at both venues over the years to evidence those thoughts.
In this year’s renewal, the second round of 74 put paid to his chances of winning, but without that, he looked well in the groove in this part of the world’s agronomy.
The longshot price of +8000 means we are amply compensated about Buckley’s chances on course debut, but I think this is his best chance of a first PGA Tour win in his short career so far.
Take Hayden Buckley to win and a top 10 finish with BetOnline amongst your best golf bets this week in Mexico.
