The LA Sparks and New York Liberty meet up again on Wednesday after playing one another just one night ago.

Double Feature

The race for the WNBA Playoffs is on as we enter the final two weeks of the regular season.

We’ve talked about this in past articles and picks, but the more we get into August, the more we’ll see the desperate teams play like it and that’s exactly what the Libs did last night.

New York took a double-digit first-half lead and turned it into a nearly 30-point win over the Sparks last night to get into the playoff picture and one has to think if we’ll see a similar result here this evening as they play one another for the second straight night.

Usually, I would say it’s hard to beat the same team twice in a row, especially on back-to-back nights, but after watching the Liberty stars put on a clinic last night, it’s hard not to like them to win again here this evening.

After their win last night, the Liberty sit as the eighth and final playoff seed, and while they have the same record as the Sparks, they own the tiebreaker after their decisive win on Tuesday.

The Favorites

Sabrina Ionescu and Natasha Howard both dominated their matchups and while we do have some injury question marks coming into this one, the Liberty are still solid WNBA Odds favorites, sitting at -6.5 in the early morning odds.

Rebecca Allen and Chiney Ogwumike collided during the first half last night and neither returned to the game. Both are considered questionable heading into Wednesday’s game. While Chiney isn’t as prolific a scorer as her sister Nneka, she has still been forced to play bigger minutes since the unexpected departure of Liz Cambage from the Sparks.

Cambage leaving has forced the Sparks to go smaller more and to give rookie second-round pick Olivia Nelson-Ododa more minutes. Nelson-Ododa played well last night and scored a career-high 12 points, but she was also no match for the Libs’ frontcourt of Natasha Howard and Han Xu down low.

We could see a similar result here this evening and it’s one of the reasons I like the total here instead of the spread.

The Sharp Pick

Wednesday will be the third and final meeting between these two and considering they just played one another last night, one has to think the defense will come easier now that they have had a full 80 minutes of basketball against one another.

The WNBA has put in more games where two teams play each other twice in a row to cut down on travel and it has mostly led to lower scoring affairs in the second game.

The Sparks getting their asses kicked last night should also have an effect, but that isn’t quite guaranteed. Their defense has been a struggle this season, but to counter that for our under play here, the Libs have been improving on defense as of late. Over their last five games, New York is only 3-2 SU, but they own the league’s second-best defensive rating over that stretch.

While New York has been playing pretty fast during these last five games, if they build a lead again against the Sparks, they should slow down in the second half like they did last night. On top of that, during that same five-game stretch, the Sparks own the league’s worst offensive rating and if they don’t have Chiney Ogwumike tonight, it might get worse.
