Los Angeles Sparks vs. Seattle Storm
Friday, May 20, 2022 – 10:00 PM EDT at Climate Pledge Arena
Los Angeles Sparks Performance Notes
After opening the season 2-0, the Sparks have dropped their last three games. A loss to Connecticut on the road is completely excusable, but a loss to the Dream on the road and then losing to Minnesota at home is a little head-scratching.
If this team wants to make the playoffs and be taken seriously, they have to beat the teams they are supposed to beat and then some.
L.A. has been forced to start the season with four straight road games too, so that’s a factor. Not only that but six of their first seven and eight of their first 10 games are on the road.
Now, they have to face Breanna Stewart and the Seattle Storm on the road. Both of these teams have been playing below expectations, so it remains to be seen which underperforming team breaks out tonight.
Seattle Storm Highlights
The Storm have struggled just because Stewart missed a week with COVID-19, and the Sparks have a number of issues. From having a lot of new pieces to a questionable coach to dealing with an injury to a rotational player tonight, the Sparks are definitely solid underdogs here.
However, I think L.A. may be slightly undervalued, especially early in the game. They are a deep team and if Chiney Ogwumike is able to play tonight, they’ll be the deeper team against the Storm.
Sparks vs. Storm Betting Analysis
While I would like to chase the steam with the Sparks, I think the full-game number is pretty fair. The Storm have a ton of depth and with all of the above factors in mind, there is always a chance the Sparks collapse down the stretch.
That being said, for the first 20 minutes, I think the Sparks have enough firepower to stay with the Storm here. Seattle is averaging 90.1 points per 100 possessions in five first halves this season and that ranks 10th in the W.
Even though the Sparks haven’t been much better in first-half offense if this is a lower scoring and more defensive affair early in the game, that gives the Sparks some value sitting at +4 first-half underdogs as displayed on BMR's top-rated books.
Two possessions across 20 minutes of basketball between two pretty evenly matched teams is all the value I need to take the points here early.
Sparks vs. Storm Betting Pick
L.A.’s Achilles heel so far this season has been their play in the first half. If you just look at their last two games, their first-half performances have been pretty bad, but across their first three games, the Sparks were +9 points in the first half. All of those were on the road.
For my betting picks, I expect to see the Sparks as the more desperate team early in the game after dropping three straights. The rest of the game is up in the air though.
