The LIV Golf International Series lands in Portland this week for its second event after its launch in London in early June.

The Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club is a two-track 18-hole complex, the Witch Hollow course and Ghost Creek course that was used for the US Women’s Open of 2003. The Ghost Creek course will supply twelve holes with the other six from Witch Hollow.

The signature Shotgun start for the 48-player contest will be used again this week and remember it finishes on Saturday with only being three rounds in duration.

Brooks Koepka Is the Latest Big-Name

Brooks Koepka is the latest big-name signing this week as he joins his brother Chase on the LIV Golf Tour. The Mexican, Abraham Ancer also quietly joined the big money league this week to follow former Masters champion, Patrick Reed and Bryson Dechambeau into the Saudi-backed venture.

That’s quite an improvement from event 1 and we have a considerably stronger contest to preview this time around. Like event

  • one a huge first prize of $4,000,000 is offered to the winner
  • the runner-up receives $2,125,000
  • last place gets $120,000

The mega-bucks theme continues with the team event netting players extra winnings for those teams in the top 3 who share $5,000,000.

Where Do We Find the Value in Portland?

There can be no doubt about it, this week’s LIV Golf Series in Portland will have the world’s media attention on it as the newbies‘:

  • Brooks Koepka
  • Patrick Reed
  • Bryson DeChambeau

If it’s anything like the London event those suspects can expect a rough ride from the golfing media. For that reason, like in London, I will be opposing all three given their focus is likely to be taken away from their golf games.

With their position in the betting market, the betting value should lurk below and around them.

Dustin Johnson Beating the Odds

When researching Pumpkin Ridge, the thing that struck me was the Poa Annua greens that will be used. It’s fair to state, that’s another factor slightly against the three newbies mentioned above.

Poa Annua putting surfaces are undoubtedly not Brooks Koepka’s strength while Patrick Reed and Bryson DeChambeau have both only won one tournament on those green types.

Dustin Johnson Affinity for Poa Annua

All roads lead back to Dustin Johnson this week as he loves Poa Annua greens. Johnson is a two-time winner at Pebble Beach while also winning the Genesis Invitational once and is a perennial contender at both events on the Californian Swing.

Most Laid-Back Individual at the Top of World Golf

Dustin Johnson is nothing if not the most laid-back individual at the top of world golf. This attribute has undoubtedly served him well in recent weeks when he’s been under scrutiny for his $150,000,000 defection to LIV Golf.

It’s noticeable to me, how well the thirty-eight-year-old from South Carolina has handled himself at press conferences. That ability to dead-bat the media scribes will mean their attention turns to those new high-profile names this week leaving Johnson to concentrate on his golf game.

Slowly but surely, Johnson’s game appears to be coming around and a solid 24th at the US Open was the best score by any LIV player.

Johnson London’s Performance

He debuted quite impressively in London with a top 10 finish and looks to be getting closer to the brilliant form that saw him land the 2020 Masters in great style.

Regular readers and followers will know that I rarely back betting favorites, but this week Johnson has such a solid look to me, that I am going to make an exemption. Take Dustin Johnson amongst your golf best bets for the LIV Golf Series Portland event with Bovada.

LIV Is Creating Betting Value

The media frenzy that is going on currently around LIV is creating betting value for the lower players in the market who can focus properly on their golf.

For my final selection, I considered the event 1 winner:

  • Charl Schwartzel
  • Matt Jones
  • Richard Bland

I wouldn’t want to put you off a small bet on all of them so it’s a case of finding the right markets.

Matt Jones Analysis

Australian Matt Jones has always been at home on Poa Annua greens so I’m trusting him to grind a top 10 this week in Portland. Jones perennially plays well at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and it’s only a few weeks since he finished 12th at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

I think Matt Jones could be a dark horse for the event this week to small stakes but do take the top 20 prices of -150 BetOnline one of BMR’s top-rated books and betting sites.
