After more than a year of rumors, announcements and news, the first LIV golf event will take place at the Centurion Club in London this week. Below, we’ll break down the LIV Golf Invitational Series London, the odds, the field, the course and share betting picks.

Where to Watch the LIV Golf Invitational

The LIV Golf Invitational will not be broadcast in the United States but live coverage will be available on LIVGolf.com, YouTube and Facebook, beginning on Thursday, June 9 at 9:00 AM ET. The tournament broadcasts will also air live on a global roster of leading premium and free-to-air broadcasters, providing coverage in 138 territories around the world.

Who Will Compete This Week?

Two-time major champion and former No. 1 in the world, Dustin Johnson, made the switch to LIV golf after previously stating that he was staying on the Tour. Johnson is pretty much the face of this new Saudi Arabia-funded tour, with rumors of a huge payday changing his mind. Six-time major champion Phil Mickelson, a ratings draw, will also receive a big payday just to play in the events, in addition to any prize money he earns.

To no surprise, Dustin Johnson is a solid favorite this week at +400 while Phil Mickelson is at +2200. Mickelson is not an appealing pick, even with those betting odds, because he’s missed several months and according to numerous reports, he’s struggled in practice.

Johnson and Mickelson are the star attractions but quality abounds, with a third of the field currently in the Top 100 of the Official World Golf Rankings. Golf fans will recognize household names like Kevin Na, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood.

Did LIV Golf Offer a Deal to Tiger Woods?

Tiger Woods is one of the golfers who would not sign on with this new tour. Greg Norman, LIV Golf consultant and former two-time major champion, told the Washington Post that Woods turned down a payday that was “mind-blowingly enormous; we’re talking about high nine digits.”

Centurion Club Information

The Centurion Club, a par 72, 7195-yard parkland track, was designed by Simon Gidman in 2013. The course is beautiful, challenging and rewarding and it has a lovely atmosphere. The conditions of fairways and greens are pristine some of the tight tree-lined holes require a strategic approach.

What is the LIV Golf Format?

With only 48 players in the field, there is no cut and the LIV Golf Invitational Series London lasts only three rounds. There will also be a shotgun start, so the action will not take as long as the usual rounds on the PGA Tour. Every day groups will start playing simultaneously in different places of the course. Having all the players teeing off at the same, with no weather advantage changes the status quo of golf and to me is pretty cool.

There’s a team aspect of LIV Golf, which won’t be of great importance to bettors but for reference, the players will be split into teams of four. The top three teams will receive $3 million for first place, $1.5 million for second and $500,000 for third. Now as far as single prize money, you can expect the players to be highly motivated. First place receives $4 million and last places $120,000.

How to Bet This Event

The big question we need to answer is who to bet on this week. Dustin Johnson hasn’t been at his best since winning the Masters in November 2020. I agree with him being the favorite but I will invest in another golfer. A player who has kept himself out of the media circus can be a great bet.

The lead-up to this event in London has been controversial, to say the least, so looking at players who have managed to keep themselves out of the media gaze and are in good current form, is a must.

South African golfer Justin Harding has managed to do just that and he is a tremendous competitor on the European Tour. Harding played at last week’s Asian Tour in England at Slaley Hall and place fourth, giving him an advantage.

Because of his strong European Tour form, I wouldn’t be surprised if Harding has an outstanding showing or even takes down this inaugural event. He’s a multiple winner and I like the price for him to place 1-3. Keep the bet size small though, as we all have to familiarize ourselves with how this new format will play out.
