This week sees the LIV Golf schedule move closer to home at the Royal Greens Golf and Country Club in Economic City, Saudi Arabia.

The track offers scenic coastal views of the Red Sea and has been used for the last four years to host the Saudi International on the European Tour.

It sees many risk-reward holes over water features on exposed terrain and familiarity with links golf is no bad thing, but overall, distance off the tee looks an asset with Dustin Johnson winning twice with a runner-up finish sandwiched in between for good measure.

LIV Golf Invitational Jeddah

Par 70, 7010 yards

How Will Royal Greens Play This Week?

When covering the Saudi International it dawned on me that there’s a strong correlation with results at Pebble Beach Golf Links with two-time champion, Dustin Johnson also a dual champion of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am while Graeme McDowell the champion in 2020, won the US Open at the same iconic Monterey Peninsula track.

Will LIV Golf in Jeddah See Another Shock This Week?

Yes, I think there’s a reasonable chance we have another upset this week in Saudi Arabia as the change of playing conditions has brought a new dynamic to the LIV schedule and levelled the playing field a little, bringing more realistic opportunities for LIV Golf more unheralded players.

Last week’s LIV Golf Invitational in Bangkok saw a completely different-looking leaderboard as a change of hemisphere turned the leaderboard upside down with LIV Golf’s premier players, Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith not contending.

Is Graeme McDowell a Sleeper With a Chance This Week?

Interestingly, sandwiched between Dustin Johnson’s two wins in the Saudi International at Royal Greens Golf and Country Club was an unexpected win for Graeme McDowell.

The Irishman and former US Open champion won the 2020 event when holding off Dustin Johnson by two shots on terrain likely well suited to the 43-year-old’s talents.

McDowell, a previous US Open champion at the iconic Pebble Beach Golf Links, which plays similar to the traditional golf links conditions often found at the Open Championship, has to be a sleeper to consider this week.

Keep stakes modest when backing Graeme McDowell as this week’s long shot with BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review) at the price of +20000.

Aussie, Matt Jones Could Be Another Sleeper at Royal Greens

One of the first names on my list for a top-20 finish every year at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am is Australian, Matt Jones. The veteran Aussie was brought up on the baked links golf of the Sydney area and should be perfectly suited to this week’s demands.

Fair to say, Jones form has suffered since joining LIV Golf so the forty-two-year-old will be keen to show what he can do in the coming days.

I do believe, Matt Jones could be a shock winner of this week’s LIV Golf Invitational in Jeddah given it was only last season he won the Honda Classic on the PGA Tour.

What I’m more confident about is, that Matt Jones looks like a solid top 10 pick this week at the Royal Greens Golf and Country Club so take the top-rated sportsbooks price of +230.

Wade Ormsby’s Reloaded Performance

The change in hemisphere last week was a huge plus for Aussie, Wade Ormsby and it was illustrated by a much-improved performance.

Ormsby had previously been a journeyman professional on the European Tour for many years and his golfing skills were always used to their fullest when the tour moved to Asia.

His one European Tour victory was in the Hong Kong Open of 2018 while unsurprisingly Ormsby had accumulated three other tournament victories in Asian Tour events.

Areas of Improvement

The courses used so far on the LIV Golf schedule before moving to Asia will have exposed his lack of length, amplifying it into a weakness.

There was a huge improvement last week and now on to a track where he’s played well previously with a top 20 finish earlier in the year, which in fairness to Ormsby should have been a lot better as he closed with a poor round of 73.

After last week’s noticeable improvement in Bangkok, this week in Jeddah is a good one to back Wade Ormsby for a top 10 finish at BetOnline.
