It was yet another disappointing weekend for Ferrari as Charles Leclerc crashed out of the French GP on lap 17 whilst in the lead, giving championship leader Max Verstappen yet another huge chunk of points and the Dutch driver now leads the standings by 53 points. Can Ferrari pull it back?

Check out our best bets for this weekend’s Formula 1 action.

Hungarian Grand Prix

Sunday, July 31, 2022 – 09:00 AM EDT at Hungaroring

Previous Round in France

Despite finishing over +300 seconds behind Charles Leclerc in qualifying, Verstappen still managed to clinch victory on French soil when Leclerc crashed out of the race on lap 17. This is now Leclerc’s 3rd DNF this season and three of these have come within his previous 7 races.

We also saw a very strong display from both Mercedes as they finished 2nd and 3rd respectively, for the first time this season. It’s the first time since last year’s Saudi Arabian GP, 13 rounds ago. We predicted both drivers to finish inside the top 6 at -175 so that one cashed quite easily.

Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz could only manage a 5th and 6th place finish as well as both Alpine finishing inside the top 10 at betting odds of -115 which we also cashed from last week’s race.

Our one losing bet was both Haas in the top 10 but we knew we were taking a small gamble at odds of +200. One driver retired from the race and the other came in 2nd last amongst the finishers.

Hungarian GP Preview

This circuit has been dominated by Mercedes in recent years, with 4 of the previous 6 race wins coming from the silver arrows, BUT things have changed and now they are the 3rd best car on the grid.

Last season, Estaban Ocon won the Hungarian GP at odds of +6000 after a crazy race that saw a multi-car crash during the first lap, as well as some other craziness throughout the race. Lewis Hamilton got held up towards the end and couldn’t make the time up quick enough finishing 2nd to the French driver.

Ocon’s best finish since then was 4th in Saudi Arabia, generally finishing on average around 7th per race.

Another Unexpected Winner This Year?

The circuit itself hasn’t been known for amazing racing as the track width is very small and overtaking opportunities are rare. The car setup is similar to the likes of Monaco, which is the track with the lowest amount of overtaking chances on the calendar.

Last year’s race was crazy mainly because of the rain, this weekend there is more rain predicted so buckle up for what could be another crazy Hungarian GP.

Pole Position

Although we might not trust Ferrari or Leclerc these days not to mess the race up, they have proven to be undoubtedly the fastest duo in qualifying this season with a total of 7 poles from 12 races.

The track should suit the Ferrari much better than the Red Bulls and although anything can happen come race day, qualifying should be a lot more controllable for the Maranello outfit.

Verstappen, in comparison, has only picked up 3 pole positions this season, and if it’s not going to be Verstappen it’s most likely going to be favorite Leclerc to take pole position. We are more than happy to take Leclerc for a pole at -112. We would bet this as low as -125.

Formula 1 Pick: Charles Leclerc to Win Pole (-112) at BetOnline

Race Winner

Last week we predicted Verstappen to win but just couldn’t bring ourselves to bet him. This week, at +150 we have to take an official stance here; this is way too valuable even based on the chances that Leclerc doesn’t even finish the race as has proved to be in recent rounds.

Throw the potential chance of rain in and the fact Ferrari always seemingly messes up their strategy and all of that more than evens out the value here. Verstappen has proved it time and time again over Leclerc, whilst the Monacan driver has bottled it more often than not this season.

Formula 1 Pick: Max Verstappen Win (+150) at BetOnline
