Montreal Alouettes vs. Ottawa Redblacks

Thursday, July 21, 2022 – 07:00 PM EDT at TD Place

Ottawa Redblacks Analysis

Last week's close loss in Hamilton was agonizing for the Redblacks against the other CFL side seeking their elusive first regular season win. The 23-25 loss was the third time in five matches the Redblacks had lost by three points or less.

  • The loss was even more agonizing when a 53-yard field goal attempt by Richie Leone came up short as the clock ticked down.
  • They also led 10-1 after an impressive opening quarter so it was a double whammy of hurt for the Redblacks.
  • Redblacks quarterback, Caleb Jones scored 2 rushing touchdowns and in fairness it was a brave effort in the fourth quarter, having trailed by 8 points midway through.
  • Playing their first game without an injured quarterback, Jeremiah Masoli was a brave effort by Ottawa but it could be a long hard slog without him.

Montreal Alouettes Analysis

A couple of weeks ago the Montreal Alouettes gave the Saskatchewan Roughriders a beating at home and I thought, it may have kick-started their CFL season. That's not been the case given last week's collapse at home to the Edmonton Elks when leading 24-12 at halftime and 31-18 before the final quarter.

  • A spectacular collapse by the Montreal Alouettes after a bright first three-quarters of the match with 4 touchdowns, 2 of which were scored by the impressive Dominique Davis who rushed for both.
  • Head coach, Danny Maciocia, admitted, “That’s a tough one to take. We need to know how to finish. When you lead by 19, you need to find a way to close the game”.
  • Losing close games has been something of a theme for the Alouettes this 2022 season with a one-point loss to Toronto Argonauts in Week 2 and a three-point loss to the Calgary Stampeders in Week 1.
  • Trevor Harris was the starter troublesome quarterback position and performed respectably.

Alouettes vs. Redblacks: CFL Betting Pick

This looks a crucial, some might say desperate, matchup with both teams badly in need of a win. It's not easy for the Redblacks with no Jeremiah Masoli at quarterback but Caleb Evans showed promise in the position.

We know that if the Redblacks are to win, it's unlikely to be easy and the Alouettes have quarterback issues of their own.

With that in mind, I'm going to trust the Montreal Alouettes to get a second CFL win of the season to modest stakes at Heritage Sports.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. BC Lions

Thursday, July 21, 2022 - 10:00 PM EDT at BC Place

BC Lions Analysis

It probably came as a shock to the system, the style in which the reigning Grey Cup champions, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers dismantled the BC Lions last week.

It's probably a good thing that the bye week was ahead given the top-rated sportsbooks were so impressed by the Lions they made them 3 point favorites before that match.

  • Quarterback, Nathan Rourke still impressed in defeat, throwing 273 yards for 3 touchdowns, and was only intercepted twice by the best side in the CFL.
  • Bryan Burnham is still out with a rib injury so that counted against the Lions who will benefit from his return at wide receiver.
  • Dominique Rhymes and Josh Pearson shared the touchdowns between them and remain very dangerous in the coming weeks.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats Analysis

There would have been a huge sigh of relief going around Hamilton on Saturday night as the Ticats recorded their first CFL win of the season. They can consider themselves a little fortunate as their opponents missed a field goal attempt in the dying seconds after they scored a late touchdown.

  • Considering they trailed 1-10 after the opening quarter, it was a hugely creditable effort by the Ticats last weekend.
  • Dane Evans throwing just under 350 yards was a noticeable improvement at quarterback for the Ticats.
  • Having thrown 8 interceptions in their opening four games to avoid any interceptions against the Redblacks was a real bonus.
  • Tim White scoring the final touchdown was a nice wrap for the impressive wide receiver who in doing so took his tally to over 70 receiving yards.

Tiger-Cats vs. Lions: CFL Betting Pick

It will be interesting to see how the BC Lions respond to their mauling by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. My hunch is that they'll be fine and that match was nothing other than a learning process for a flourishing team.

For that reason, I'm happy to trust the BC Lions to cover the spread at -108 with Heritage Sports.
