This week we look at Thursday’s clash between the Edmonton Elks vs. Calgary Stampeders and Friday’s match-up between the Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Ottawa Redblacks.

Let’s take a look at the betting odds for Week 5 in the Canadian Football League.

Edmonton Elks vs. Calgary Stampeders

Thursday, July 07, 2022 – 07:30 PM EDT at Commonwealth Stadium

Can the Elks Gain Quick Revenge?

Yes, with home-field advantage the Edmonton Elks might fancy their chances of a revenge CFL win. Two weeks ago, they lost on the road to the Stampeders 23-30 but made a strong comeback to beat the Hamilton-Tiger Cats last week.

  1. In that previous meeting against Calgary, the Elks led 13-3 with two minutes remaining in the first half but allowed a late first-half touchdown. The pressure would have been on the Stampeders for the second half and the result could have been very different.
  2. Last week the Elks had a tough road trip to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. They trailed 6-16 after the opening quarter but they rallied superbly in the final quarter (14-3) to win 29-25.
  3. Kai Locksley got in the end zone for the second week in succession.
  4. Elks defensive back, Jalen Collins scored the match-winning touchdown with 88 seconds left on the clock.
  5. Quarterback, Tre Ford made an encouraging debut for the Elks, replacing Nick Arbuckle in the key position.

Stampeders Are on a Hot Streak

It’s been an impressive start for the Calgary Stampeders who went 3-0 before last week’s bye week. There’s every reason to believe the Stampeders will extend their winning start to their 2022 Grey Cup campaign this week against the Edmonton Elks.

  1. It’s been a clean start for the Stampeders managing to win their opening three matches, albeit each one was quite close.
  2. Titus Wall is making waves in his rookie season all over the field. He has one touchdown, an interception, a forced fumble and fifteen tackles in his opening three CFL games.
  3. Receiver, Malik Henry has been in good form with a personal-best of 173 receiving yards from six catches against the Elks.
  4. Kicker Rene Paredes continues that reliable form that makes him fundamental to his team’s success.

Betting Pick

It was encouraging to see the Edmonton Elks get off the mark in Hamilton and they face another stern test this week. A huge concern for the Elks this season is their dire home-field form.

With that in mind, it’s hard to support them but I DO THINK THIS MATCH-UP HAS POINTS IN IT AND PLENTY. The total is set high at 51 with Bovada (visit our Bovada Review) so let’s take the match to go overs like 6/7 have done, containing these two sides all season.

Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Ottawa Redblacks

Friday, July 08, 2022 - 08:30 PM EDT at Mosaic Stadium

Ottawa to face a Rough Side in Saskatchewan

Last week saw the Saskatchewan Roughriders gain quick revenge on the Montreal Alouettes as they made home-field advantage tell in the third quarter with a 21-0 shutout of the Als. This meant the Roughriders have gone 2-0 with home-field advantage so far in their 2022 campaign with two comfortable wins. Will this week make three?

  1. Running back, Jamal Morrow with a brace of touchdowns impressed for Saskatchewan.
  2. Cody Fajardo added a rushing touchdown as well as a solid game at quarterback. He was quoted as saying, “It goes to show when we get hot, we can be a really good team”.
  3. Brett Lauther made a 57-yard field goal and is a solid reliable kicker for the Roughriders.
  4. Everything is very upbeat coming out of Saskatchewan and head coach Craig Dickenson described it as their best performance of the year.

A game effort in defeat by the Redblacks

The Ottawa Redblacks remained without a win in the CFL last week but the 31-34 loss to the high-flying BC Lions was a respectable effort. It wasn’t the worst performance from Ottawa who managed to hold the free-scoring BC Lions in check without ever really threatening to win.

  • Quarterback, Jeremiah Masoli wasn’t very effective against the Lions with a low completion rate of 50 yards and one rushing touchdown.
  • The Achilles heel for the Redblacks was giving away soft penalties. They need to tidy up soon if they are to get anything out of this year’s Grey Cup campaign.
  • Head coach Paul LaPolice, said, “When we pressured them, we had miscommunications. We have to prevent the explosives”.
  • Money Hunter was a shining light in defense with two interceptions.

Betting Pick

We know the Redblacks' problem and that is their ability to shoot themselves in the foot by constantly giving away needless penalties. That is hardly what the doctor ordered for the rough ride that awaits this week in Saskatchewan.

The spread is set at 8.5 which looks high enough so I’m going to lean to the overs as I expect Saskatchewan to put up at least 30 points with home-field advantage. If they do, the overs should sail in, so add the over 45.5 amongst your best bets.

CFL Pick: Roughriders/Redblacks Over 45.5 (-110) at Bovada
