We’ll break down two of the top CFL matchups of the week: Toronto Argonauts vs. Montreal Alouettes and Ottawa Redblacks vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

CFL Week 1 saw the Montreal Alouettes on the road to the Calgary Stampeders and they can count themselves rather unfortunate to come away defeated.  The Alouettes led 24-14 at half-time but eventually lost 27-30.

Last week’s match was a close affair with the Ottawa Redblacks looking at the likely winners during the middle phase of the match, only for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to win in the fourth quarter 19-17.

Keep reading as we’ll go into an in-depth analysis of the CFL odds and share two winning picks!

Toronto Argonauts vs. Montreal Alouettes

Thursday, June 16, 2022 – 07:30 PM EDT at BMO Field

CFL Week 1 | Toronto Argonauts Recap

  • The Toronto Argonauts, start their 2022 Grey Cup campaign, a week late having had a bye in CFL Week 1.
  • Former NFL ‘journeyman’ Quarterback, McLeod Bethel-Thompson found his range in last season’s CFL when he led the Toronto Argonauts to the Eastern Final of the Grey Cup.
  • With the new variables like a 12-man defense in the CFL it takes time to adjust to throwing in the League but the thirty-four-year-old Bethel-Thompson should hit the ground running this year.
  • If not, the Argonauts have another NFL ‘Journeyman’ Chad Kelly who has impressed pre-season.
  • Maple-leaf Sports and Entertainment chairman Larry Tanenbaum has said they are not happy with the structure of the CFL and the lack of younger-fan engagement. Time will tell if his comments have a negative connotation on the pitch.

CFL Week 1 | Montreal Alouettes Highlights

  • The CFL’s leading rusher in 2021, Willian Stanback was stretchered off the field in the second quarter after scoring a touchdown catch in the first.
  • Stanback is expected to be sidelined for the time being and that was a major blow on the evening and in the future for the Alouettes.
  • Quarterback, Vernon Adams Jr. was having his first start since October 2021 and had a 60% completion rate and one touchdown throw. He threw two interceptions but hopefully, he will improve for shaking the rust off his throwing arm.

Argonauts vs. Alouettes Betting Pick

The Montreal Alouettes had plenty go against them in their opening game vs. the Calgary Stampeders after the League’s leading rusher, Willian Stanback was carted off and another road trip is hardly the tonic they’re looking for in Montreal.

The Argonauts have a freshness to their team with no game in CFL Week 1 so that’s an advantage regardless.

It feels like, we have to trust the home team to deliver the win against a banged-up Alouettes so take the Toronto Argonauts at less than a field goal spread with BMR's top-rated books and betting sites.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs. Ottawa Redblacks

Friday, June 17, 2022 – 07:30 PM EDT at Place Stadium

CFL Week 1 | Ottawa Redblacks Recap

  • New quarterback, Jeremiah Masoli continued his promising pre-season form with a 70% completion rate, 380 yards, and one touchdown.
  • Masoli commented on the strong team spirit in Ottawa, when he said, “I love this group. These guys fought hard until the end.  We lost, came up short, but you could see our resiliency until the end”.
  • Former Bombers offensive coordinator Paul LaPolice was pleased with the Redblacks showing but knows they will have to give away fewer penalties in the future, they cost them dear in Winnipeg.

CFL 1 Week 1 | Winnipeg Blue Bombers Highlights

  • Winnipeg Blue Bombers started their pursuit of a third successive Grey Cup with a rather fortuitous final seconds victory over the Ottawa Redblacks.
  • With two minutes remaining, the Blue Bombers unluckily lost their quarterback, Zach Collaros who had to be removed by the injury spotter.
  • This made backup quarterback Dru Brown the unwitting hero as he came on, concerned at the plight of Collaros one minute, only to do his job and keep the ball moving downfield to set up Mark Liegghio's 25-yard field goal to win the match 19-17 with seconds to spare.
  • Head coach, Mike O'Shea was luke-warm about the performance and said, “I think there's a lot of things we will look at. There's certainly a positive (the win), but that will not be the focal point.  The focal point will be how did we put ourselves in that position”.

Bombers vs. Redblacks Betting Pick

Last week we took the early +9.5 on the Ottawa Redblacks and they covered it easily with readers and followers getting good CLV (Closing Line Value) as the line moved a field goal into +6.5.

This week, the Redblacks have home-field advantage and as Masoli stated, there is every reason to be encouraged by the display and unity within the squad.

They say, “Revenge is a dish best served cold” and this week, the Ottawa Redblacks have the opportunity to serve it up to the defending Grey Cup winners.

I like taking the spread at +6 on the Ottawa Redblacks to cover for the second time in a week amongst my CFL best bets.
