3M Open 2022

Thursday, July 21 to Sunday, July 24, 2022 at TPC Twin Cities

Par 71, 7431 yards

This week the PGA Tour moves on to Blaine in Minnesota for the fourth renewal of the 3M Open. TPC Twin Cities is a track originally designed by the late Arnold Palmer and has set an interesting test in the three previous seasons.

Fifteen under par was the winning score for Cameron Champ last year and it set a trickier test than the PGA Tour debut in 2019 when twenty-one under par won.

Many water hazards strategically await the professionals, and they demand a strong approach play to the Bentgrass greens. Any players in form with a bias towards Bentgrass are likely to be at an advantage this week with an above-average putting week needed to post the low numbers required.

Cameron Loves TPC Twin Cities

We know Cameron Champ was last year’s winner but PGA Tour grinder, Cameron Tringale loves TPC Twin Cities also and was 3rd here in 2020. Last year he backed up that effort with 16th to underline his growing affinity with this strategic test.

Amazingly, despite nearly 350 PGA career starts Tringale is winless so his world ranking reaching the top 50 in recent times is a testament to his consistency on the PGA Tour.

This year, he’s been his usual reliable self with five top 20 finishes with a 3rd at the Farmers Insurance Open being the highlight.

A couple of weeks ago Tringale was quick out of the blocks at the Scottish Open only to falter over the weekend and last week he consolidated well at the British Open.

There Is Hope for Tringale

What’s been noticeable this season, is the number of long-term maidens who have finally found that first career title. We’ve had Talor Gooch, Luke List and Tom Hoge finally get rid of the unwanted tag of a maiden and that should bring hope to the thirty-four-year-old from California.

I think we should trust Cameron Tringale to make the top 20 for a third time in Blaine amongst our best golf picks this week, as a banker with Betonline (visit our BetOnline Review), while adding a modest stake on him following those three names into the winners’ enclosure at the 3M Open.

Will Emiliano Grillo Heat up This Week?

Argentinian, Emiliano Grillo could certainly heat up this week. When discussing Tringale, we mentioned how difficult he finds winning tournaments and the same could be said in recent times about Grillo.

A winner early in his PGA Tour career at the Frys Open of 2015, Grillo looked bound for the top with his high-functioning natural ability reminiscent of his compatriot, Angel Cabrera.

The pieces of the jigsaw haven’t fallen into place for the twenty-nine-year-old South American as many good judges expected. He’s a real flusher of the golf ball and the runner-up finish at the John Deere Classic a couple of weeks ago reminded us that he’s still a contender.

A Good Outlook for Grillo

This week at TPC Twin Cities looks like the perfect week for Emiliano Grillo to win his first PGA Tour title in seven years given he was third here in 2020 when Michael Thompson pipped both him and Tringale on the line.

With Emiliano Grillo’s confidence on the rise, it’s not hard to visualize that one of the sport’s most naturally talented golfers wins his second PGA crown this week.

Bo Hoag finding form at the right time

Last year’s 3M Open saw Bo Hoag finish 16th after 12th in the previous renewal. Last year’s 16th doesn’t tell the full story as Hoag threatened the higher reaches of the leaderboard all week but for a double-bogey, at the par 5 18th and a bogey on the 16th, he would have finished in the top 5.

There can be little doubt that his form since has been a product of a loss of confidence triggered by that collapse.

A Chance of Redemption

The slump in form has been so pronounced for the Ohio resident that until the John Deere Classic two weeks ago, he hadn’t managed a top 20 finish on the PGA Tour since. That was an encouraging effort from Hoag, and he gets a chance of redemption a year on.

We know that Bo Hoag loves TPC Twin Cities and arriving here in the best form of the season gives the thirty-three-year-old an opportunity for redemption.

I suggest taking Bo Hoag to make it a hat-trick of top 20 finishes in Minnesota this week amongst your best golf bets.
