2023 Valspar Championship

Thursday, March 16 through Sunday, March 19, 2023 – at Innisbrook Golf Resort

Copperhead Course

Par 71, 7340 yards

Trust This Year’s Rookies at Innisbrook

Last week’s tough test at TPC Sawgrass will have left its mark on many so we need to be very aware of that for this week’s selections, on what is, another tough layout.

Sam Burns goes for an unprecedented hat trick of Valspar Championships in succession.

Burns was an eyecatcher last week but like the others, however, he could be fatigued from the demands at Ponte Vedra so our attention for this week’s winner at BMR has turned elsewhere.

Course Notes:

  • Par 71, 7340 yards.
  • Close to the Pacific Ocean and susceptible to winds with water in play on 50% of the holes.
  • Unusually five Par3s, so par 3 scorings can be a helpful stat to use.
  • Undulating tree-lined Bermuda fairways.
  • Tricky fast Bermuda TifEagle greens of below average size.
  • Key metrics – as mentioned, par 3 scoring, greens in regulation, and confident Bermuda putters encourage a strong mix of player types.
  • Overall, like last week, this week’s test doesn’t prejudice the shorter players and is a strategic test of patience.

Weather Forecast

The weather in Palm Harbor this week looks changeable with the calmest days being Thursday and Friday with a poor forecast on Saturday that predicts strong winds and rain.

The rain will continue into Sunday although winds lessen by 10mph and it’s possible there could be a Monday finish.

Former World #1 Amateur Coody to Break Through

This author believes you can trust this year’s rookies at Innisbrook by using last year’s brave effort in defeat by newcomer and runner-up Davis Riley as a guide.

The first golfer in our sights is Pierceson Coody who made a fantastic impression at Bay Hill in the Arnold Palmer Invitational.  Remember, that was an elevated event and a much stronger field, so 14th place is a very noteworthy finish for the twenty-three-year-old from Texas.

I mentioned Davis Riley’s great performance in coming in second last year when being beaten to the title by Sam Burns. So just keep in mind that Coody has already followed Riley as a winner of the Panama Championship earlier in the year on the Korn Ferry Tour.

In recent seasons there have been several meteoric rises through the amateur and professional ranks to the top of the sport and Coody could be yet another one. He has been prolific since his collegiate days as the former world-ranked #1 amateur.

Take Pierceson Coody to spring a surprise this week in Florida at the fantastic price of (+7500) with Bovada.

Keep an Eye on Gerard

Only three weeks ago, Ryan Gerard qualified for the Honda Classic and went on to finish fourth.

The twenty-three-year-old from Raleigh in North Carolina went on to back that up with 11th at the Puerto Rico Open and now tees it up at the Valspar Championship with a newfound confidence.  Gerard has shown some hidden course form in the past at the Junior PLAYERS Championship presented by TaylorMade-adidas in 2017 that Joaquin Niemann won when he was third.

So, to be coming back to familiar pastures this week is a huge plus for Ryan Gerard who is one big performance away from locking up his playing privileges on the PGA Tour.  The time is now for Ryan Gerard among your best bets this week (+8000) with Bovada.

A Fast Start for Young?

I mentioned that Davis Riley won the Panama Championship in 2020 and Pierceson Coody this season but at this point, I need to mention that Carson Young won in the intervening 2022 season.

The last couple of weeks on the PGA Tour have been encouraging for the twenty-eight-year-old from South Carolina with 29th at the Honda Classic followed by third at the Puerto Rico Open and on both occasions, he has been the first-round leader

We, therefore, know that Carson Young can be fast out of the gates currently and in form so let’s take him in the First-Round leader market (+10000) with BetOnline and top 20 for this week’s Valspar Championship amongst our best bets.
