Craig Edwards @EdwardsTips_ finds the 2023 Puerto Rico Open Best Bets for BMR

Although Martin Trainer can be one of the most erratic PGA Tour regulars, you can argue he thrives in the unique surroundings of Puerto Rico having won the 2019 renewal on debut.  Does he have the chops to take home the top prize at the 2023 Puerto Rico Open?

Read ahead for our top selections for the upcoming PGA event this coming weekend.

2023 Puerto Rico Open

Thursday, March 2 through Sunday, March 5, 2023 – at Grand Reserve Country Club

Par: 72, 7506 yards

Puerto Rico Specialists Thrive in the Agronomy

Mark Trainer, the thirty-one-year-old American golfer was born in France and that panache for South & Central American golf can be seen in many of his results throughout the years.

Last season’s best efforts on the PGA Tour were both in Latin America at The Mexico Open at Vidanta and the Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic, respectively.

Prior to that, Trainer won the El Bosque Mexico Championship on the KFT Tour of 2018 and the Mazatlan Open again in Mexico on the PGA Tour Latinoamérica of 2016.

A couple of weeks ago Trainer was in the top 20 at the Pebble Beach Pro-am which is a perfect preparation for this week.

When the PGA Golf Tour ventures into South and Central America, it is often what I call “Trainer Time” so take the hint and back Martin Trainer win and props in the top 10 this week.

Course Notes

  • The Grand Reserve Country Club is a Tom Kite design.
  • Par 72, 7506 yards.
  • Slow grainy Paspalum greens.
  • Key Metrics for success – long off the tee, strong GIR stats, adaptability to play in the wind, and comfortability with the slower Paspalum greens.
  • 66% of the holes have watery hazards, usually lakes and there is ample bunkering to negotiate.

The Oceanside track is exposed to the natural elements which are the best defense this flattish wide track has.

A good weather week means 20 under-par is required as the table below shows but any poor weather changes that dramatically as 2016 illustrates.

Weather Forecast

Early weather forecasts suggest there are 40 km/h winds due on Friday after a calmer Thursday with those winds due to lessen over the weekend but still be above 20 km/h.

Those high winds on Friday look to be forecast at their strongest from midday onwards so A.M./P.M. could be the most difficult tee time handing the late/early ones a slight advantage.

Is Carson Too Young for Puerto Rico?

At twenty-eight-years-old is Carson Young too early in his PGA Tour career to win in Puerto Rico?

As mentioned earlier, course specialists thrive in the agronomy of Latin America and Carson Young has one previous experience of playing the Puerto Rico Open.  That could be useful, however, despite a missed cut, because last week’s effort at the Honda Classic was a career-best for the South Carolina native.

A year ago, Young won the Panama Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour, an event that has always had a strong correlation with results here at the Grand Reserve Country Club.

Rather interestingly, Martin Trainer won here with a similar profile and age in 2019 which is further encouragement that Young is a shred of hidden value this week

A trip down to Puerto Rico has the potential to be perfect timing for Carson Young this week so take a small bet on his longshot chances while adding a props top 10 finish bet with BetOnline.

Don’t Teater About Props as Josh Loves It in Puerto Rico

Josh Teater’s career-best effort on the PGA Tour was his runner finish here to Viktor Hovland in 2020.

Since the forty-three-year-old from Kentucky has been back to plying his trade mostly on the Korn Ferry Tour, he will jump at the opportunity of a start here.

His previous effort in 2023, was a good one on the Korn Ferry Tour in the similar agronomy of Colombia and that bodes perfectly for this week at a venue he has made the top 40 on five of the six occasions

Josh Teater is my idea of a solid journeyman pro in good form playing golf in his preferred environment this week so add him as your best props bet at BMR with BetOnline’s top 20 market.
