Craig Edwards @EdwardsTips_ finds the 2023 Players Championship Best Bets for BMR

2023 THE PLAYERS Championship

Thursday, March 9 through Sunday, March 12, 2023 – at TPC Sawgrass

Par: 72, 7189 yards

Course Notes

  • Pete Dye design – par 72 over 7189 yards.
  • Famous iconic signature hole, the par-3 17th to an island green.
  • Water in play on all but one hole.
  • Strategically demanding and requires extra patience from the golfers.
  • Fast TifEagle Bermuda Grass greens that can get bumpy and crustier as event goes on if there is no rain.
  • Key Metrics – greens in regulation is the key stat.
  • Overall, the TPC Sawgrass is a quirky test where many of the sport’s notoriously worse putters, but brilliant ball strikers have flourished.  Sergio Garcia has the best course record – need I say more!

Weather Forecast

The current weather predictions for Ponte Vedra in Florida are reasonably settled for the four days with winds not too blustery which can often be a problem at TPC Sawgrass.

Temperatures are forecast cooler on Thursday and Sunday with the threat of rain on Friday.

Thomas to Tank Through the Players Championship

For the last six months, I have been of the belief that Kim Joo-hyung, more affectionately known as Tom Kim for his love of Thomas the Tank Engine would be perfectly suited to the TPC Sawgrass.

At twenty years of age, Tom Kim is a precocious talent. Kim though is not typically long off the tee like most of the young talent making their way in the sport, but rather an accurate immaculate tee-to-green game which is perfect for TPC Sawgrass

The two PGA Tour events that Kim won in the fall of 2022, the Wyndham Championship and Shriners Open offer many correlations with the results here and what is required from the players.

I find it easy to look past his last two results at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Genesis Invitational on tracks that don’t ideally suit and in context, his made cuts were impressive on debut.

At (+4000) Tom Kim is the best bet at BMR this week for the 2023 Players Championship.

Does Anyone Play TPC Sawgrass Better than Jason Day?

I can only think of one player who matches Jason Day’s recent course form at the Players Championship on the quirky track, TPC Sawgrass and that’s Sergio Garcia who has joined LIV Golf.

We know week by week; Day is building his profile back and world ranking in the right direction after another solid week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

When Jason Day was at the top of his game and world number #1, he was an impressive winner here in 2017 and with three other top 8 finishes at TPC Sawgrass we know Day has what it takes to combat the many questions, the Stadium course asks.

Of all our three picks at BMR this week Jason Day has the best props angle so take him at (+300) for another top-10 finish with BetOnline.

Can Shane Lowry Find the Resolve?

At the Honda Classic the weekend before last, Shane Lowry bravely finished the event after his uncle, Jimmy Lowry passed away on the opening day of the tournament.

The thirty-five-year-old Irishman expressed his sadness in an interview after Saturday’s round when he said, “To be honest, I wanted to go home on Thursday when I heard the news. A lot of people talked me out of it.”  Lowry went on the add, “Hopefully I can go out and make him proud tomorrow. Everyone keeps telling me how proud he was of me over the last number of years."

Make him proud, he did, with a 5th place finish, and despite probably being tempted to travel home, Lowry went on to play in last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Inner Strength Driving Lowry

I suspect that was a commitment to this week’s Players Championship, golf’s “unofficial fifth major” as a preparation.  Lowry has three times shown up well in the Players Championship, looking well suited to TPC Sawgrass demands, and fits the mold of many previous champions, who were elite ball strikers but were prone to be dodgy putters.

With that perspective, a top-20 finish about Shane Lowry looks like a safe prop bet with BetOnline this week.

Shane Lowry has the profile of a “Players Champion in the making” and with his resolve likely higher than ever to honor the memory of his Uncle Jimmy, an emotional victory could be on the cards for Sunday at TPC Sawgrass.
