Will the Memorial Be Sahith Theegala’s First PGA Title?

Yes, I think the Memorial Tournament of 2023 can be Sahith Theegala’s first PGA Tour title. The twenty-five-year-old Californian has made a meteoric rise through the world rankings to world number #27 and he is only mid-way through his second full season on the PGA Tour.

The Netflix documentary “Full Swing” documented much of Theegala’s rookie 2022 season which was dominated by painful close shaves at the Phoenix Open and Travelers Championship. On both occasions, he put up valiant efforts in defeat and could count himself unlucky not to have a PGA Tour win by now.

This season, Sahith Theegala has been impressive again with five top-6 finishes, and a top-10 placing at the Masters Tournament while he did win the pairs invitational, the QBE Shootout.

Last season Theegala acquitted himself well here at Muirfield Village when finishing 5th at +2000 for readers and followers, building on an impressive 32nd on debut in 2021. Sahith Theegala is a rock-solid pick at (+5000) with Bovada and adds a top-10 prop given his propensity for top-10s this season on the PGA Tour, who represents value at the top U.S. betting sites.

Memorial Tournament

June 1 – June 4, 2023 at Muirfield Village Golf Club

Course Notes

  • Muirfield Village Golf Club
  • Dublin, Ohio
  • Par 72, 7532 yards
  • Nicknamed “Jack’s place” after designer, the great Jack Nicklaus.
  • Small Bentgrass greens with many undulations and challenging spots if you find the wrong areas.
  • This means accurate iron play is a prerequisite at Muirfield Village and with the course on the long side, accuracy combined with length in driving are also key.

Champions

This great event dates to 1976 and we have broken down the last seven winners and their scores below.

Weather Forecast

The weather for Dublin in Ohio this week looks perfect with high temperatures and a light breeze forecast.

Leading Contenders

Jon Rahm (+700)

The Spaniard and reigning Masters champion loves Muirfield Village and was the winner here in 2020. Don’t forget he held a six-shot lead in 2021 when defending his title and was unlucky to fail a Covid-19 test and be forced to withdraw despite no symptoms.

Rahm is much preferred at Muirfield Village to his two compatriots at the top of the betting market, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

Patrick Cantlay (+1100)

Double Memorial champion, Patrick Cantlay looks primed to make a strong bid for a hat-trick of titles at “Jack’s place”. His stats off the tee are trending in the right direction which is always a good sign for the Californian and long-term followers and readers will know we have backed him both years he won here. Make Patrick Cantlay a must-bet from the top of the market this week.

Value Range

Shane Lowry (+4500)

The Northern Irishman is perfectly suited to the strategic demands on accuracy and length here. His two strongest displays this year have been in the Masters and PGA Championship and if his flatstick behaves better he has every chance here.

Hideki Matsuyama (+3500)

The Japanese superstar was the champion here on debut in 2014. This year the thirty-one-year-old has been blighted by injury but still performed creditably. Several weeks ago, he returned home for treatment of his troublesome neck injury. Matsuyama looked better in Texas and at the PGA, so with a week off in between, perhaps this is the week Hideki can return to the winner’s circle.

Rickie Fowler (+4000)

Rickie Fowler is on a hell of a comeback with his new remodeled swing and last week’s strong effort got him into the Open at Royal Liverpool, a track he was runner-up at in 2014. Twice a runner-up in 2010 and 2017, he is overdue another high finish here and perhaps this is the year.

Take Rickie Fowler for another top 5 finish here and as a top-20 prop bet also.
