This year, this long-established WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational (previously St. Jude Classic) has a name change to the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship and kicks off the FedEx Playoffs in a slight change to the PGA Tour schedule.

This means the top 125 players on the standings play this week with a cut in force as normal but also there’s a cut-off for the top 70 taken on the money list to make next week’s BMW Championship (a no-cut event).

Designed by Ron Pritchard, the TPC Southwind is a tricky test for the PGA Tour professionals with Bermuda Grass greens and Zoysia grass fairways.

The track has many correlations with others but none more so than the iconic Pebble Beach.

Will Matthew Fitzpatrick be the Pick at the Top of the Market?

New US Open champion, Matthew Fitzpatrick looks like the betting pick at the top of the market.

The young Englishman was 4th on debut in 2019 and followed that up with a 6th place finish in 2020. This 2022 season started at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am where he finished 6th and that kick-started a year that’s contained an amazing nine top 10 finishes. That astounding consistency was rewarded at the US Open where he landed a first PGA Tour win and Major Championship at the same time.

That had been long overdue for the 27-year-old who has been a multiple winner of the European Tour on some of their biggest events.

I’m expecting the floodgates to open now for the 27-year-old and a slew of PGA Tour titles to follow. We know how well he played at Pebble Beach at the start of the year, nicely fitting in with course correlation and his ability to play well off a break. Let’s take Matthew Fitzpatrick’s win at +2200 with Bovada and top 10 amongst our best golf bets this week.

Can Tom Hoge Strike the Pebble Correlation in Memphis?

Part of the reason I like the huge correlation between TPC Southwind and Pebble Beach is the slew of strong form players like Daniel Berger, Dustin Johnson, and Phil Mickelson have at both.

By taking that perspective, this year’s winner, Tom Hoge has to be considered. 4th last time out at the 3M Open twinned with 12th here in Memphis on debut back in 2015 certainly reinforces respectable credentials.

The interesting aspect this week is many of the players at the top of the market have been resting since the Open Championship so it may be a reasonable time to oppose them in general.

I wouldn’t suggest anything but a modest stake on Tom Hoge but he’s undoubtedly worth taking in your best golf bets in the top 10 with BetOnline and win market with GTbets (visit our GTbets Review) this week.

Can Chez Recapture Old Glories at TPC Southwind?

Going back a few years, Chez Reavie was ultra-consistent at TPC Southwind with six top 27 finishes from seven attempts, three of which were in the top 6.

We know the 40-year-old is in fine form after winning the Barracuda Championship two starts ago. The Kansas man holds an impressive plethora of Pebble Beach form with a runner-up finish in the 2019 US Open the highlight.

You have to like Chez Reavie’s chances in the place markets this week so take the BetOnline top 20 prices of +375, while adding a modest win stake at +12500 with Everygame (visit our Everygame Review).

Is Trey Mullinax This Week’s Dark Horse?

One of the more interesting dynamics about this week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship is the old St Jude Classic form before it became a WGC event in recent seasons.

One guy who loved it here in those early days when the field wasn’t as strong was Trey Mullinax who managed a 6th in 2018 after 17th the previous year. Back then, Mullinax was struggling to hold onto his PGA Tour card in the early stages of his career.

If we fast-forward to 2022, we see the Alabama man, at the top of his game, having won the Barbasol Championship, which got him into the Open Championship where his 21st finish was impressive. After a couple of weeks’ rest, Mullinax resurfaced a week ago at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

That should have sharpened his game perfectly for a week. I expect him to be looking forward to in his neighboring state. I believe the 30-year-old Trey Mullinax represents great value as this week’s dark horse so look to take BetOnline top 20 price of +500 while adding him in the outright win market as a longshot with +25000 Everygame.
