The 2022 PGA Tour year curtain raises with its familiar Tournament of Champions in Hawaii. The Plantation Course is something of an acquired taste with blind shots and many elevation changes.

There’s no pressure off the tee with wide resort fairways so the approach shot control in the wind has proved pivotal in the past combined with an affinity to Bermuda Grass greens.

Rely on the Mr. Reliable, Patrick Reed in Hawaii

There’s no need to complicate matters on the opening week of the 2022 PGA Tour year as Patrick Reed fits the scenario on so many levels. Winner of this event back in 2015 and runner up in 2016 and 2020 with an exceptional stroke average of 69.46 in the last seven renewals.

Like the other week when we tipped Reed in win and place at the Hero World Challenge, the reasons are similar. That week it was an end-of-season event and there were doubts about many competitors on sharpness and motivational level while Reed was a proven horse for the course of the Hero World Challenge dynamics.

I don’t expect motivation to be lacking this week for the field but there’s no doubt sharpness will be an issue after the festive season. We have to take on trust that they are fully primed which many won’t be, but we know Reed has plenty of previous forms here to believe he will be sharp enough to win.

Sunjae Im to Win on His Second Start at the Plantation Course Like Many Others Before

Last year Sungjae Im debuted impressively at the Plantation Course in Kapalua with a 5th place finish. It came as no surprise to see Im start a year well having won on his first start of 2018 in the Bahamas on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Like Reed, he plays a massive schedule compared to the sport’s other top players and treats every week alike. Sungjae Im admits to loving playing so to be out of competitive action since mid-November will have bothered him and he will be ‘chomping at the bit’ for his first event.

He’s proven on Bermuda greens as illustrated by his tournament win at the Honda Classic and it’s only three starts ago he won the Shriners Open for his second PGA Tour title. Another factor in our favor is that he should and could improve significantly with last year’s course experience as his fifteenth club in the bag. Interestingly, Patrick Reed won on his second start here in 2015 as did Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Xander Schauffele, and last year’s winner, Harris English.

Trust Sungjae Im to be sharp at the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions and take the with +2500 with GTbets.

Matt Jones Suited by Kapalua

Australian journeyman, Matt Jones looks an interesting selection on his second start in Hawaii has been an eye-catcher here on his only appearance in 2015 when placing 11th. That’s not too surprising given Matt Jones often excels in seaside golf when at the mercy of the elements.

With such a stellar field it’s a big ask to win the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions unless the weather turns bad, but it’s not hard to envisage Matt Jones claiming a top 20 finish so that’s the market we will take him in with BetOnline.
