Last week, Jordan Spieth described Southern Hills as “Colonial on steroids” so I’m guessing many will be happier for an easier and shorter if similar test to last week’s PGA Championship in Tulsa.
Charles Schwab Challenge
Thursday, May 26 to Sunday, May 29, 2022 at Colonial Golf Course
Founded in 1946, with Ben Hogan the inaugural winner, the name long associated with the event, having been a Fort Worth resident. His statue overlooks the course, and the winner is presented with a tartan plaid jacket to honor the game’s traditions.
The course is a tough test of a player’s character and an ability to shape shots both ways is important on a track that cannot be overpowered. Bentgrass greens are used again like last week and that’s a pleasant continuity for this year’s competitors who will be chasing a winning score of fifteen under par or better for the win.
Will Colonial be Won by Webb Simpson?
Yes, I think there’s every chance that the Charles Schwab Challenge will be won by this week.
Last week at the PGA Championship, Webb Simpson served notice that his game was close to turning around after a poor 2022. There have been injury concerns in the background hanging over the North Carolina man so his third round of 65 at Southern Hills was encouraging as he managed his first top 20 finish of the year.
Last week should be the perfect shot in the arm of confidence for the thirty-six-year-old as he arrives at The Colonial Golf Course, a track he has managed two top 5 finishes at. That’s little surprise when you consider his modus operandi on the PGA Tour is the shorter tracks closer to 7000 yards.
Webb Simpson is a seven-time PGA Tour winner including wins at the US Open and Players Championship so take last week’s hint that he’s back to form and add him amongst your best bets this week at +4000 with Everygame (visit our Everygame Review).

Can Abraham Ancer Win?
Several things are pointing to Abraham being the Ancer this week. The last two renewals of the Charles Schwab Challenge have seen Abraham Ancer get to grips with the demands of The Colonial Country Club with a couple of solid efforts.
Last week’s PGA Championship at Southern Hills saw his best strokeplay effort of the year when he finished 9th. At last year’s FedEx St. Jude Invitational, he won his first PGA Tour title, and interestingly, that was coming off the back of a strong Olympic effort in Japan when he finished 14th.
The travel involved back to America which was a remarkable effort by the Mexican and showed he could back up a big performance. That’s what he will need to do this week if he’s to win and it’s worth noting a results correlation with the St. Jude Invitational given the 2020 winner here, Daniel Berger is a two-time champion in the Memphis event.
This week is a fairly strong field allowing us to get Abraham Ancer at a good price amongst our best golf bets at +3300 with BetOnline.

Kirk Has the Enterprise to Win at Colonial for a Second Time
Chris Kirk’s last win on the PGA Tour was here in 2015 and I can remember it as clear as day having backed him at +5000. That was his fourth PGA Tour title and he seemed bound for the top of the sport.
2019 saw Kirk need to take a complete break from professional golf with alcohol issues and he returned in 2020 a stronger player. Almost, immediately he won the King & Bear Classic at World Golf Village on the Korn Ferry Tour when ranked World No. 522.
Once back on the main PGA Tour the thirty-seven-year-old from Knoxville in Tennessee has never looked back, climbing the world rankings to 67th.
The one thing he’s left to do is win a fifth PGA Tour title since his comeback and this week brings the perfect opportunity at a track, he has a close affinity with, given last week he looked back close to his best at the PGA Championship.
Last week was a tough one but it would be nothing new for Kirk to back up a big effort and as we discussed earlier about the course, it’s not one the players can overpower but rather that guile and creativity are needed.
We know Chris Kirk has the enterprise needed to win at Colonial so why not for a second time at the attractive price of +5000 with GTbets (visit our GTbets Review).
