The last leg of the Triple Crown is not always memorable like when we have the same horse that has won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

While the interest might not be the same to the wagering public, those who enjoy horse racing are still fascinated and history awaits the winner.

BMR’s Betting Pulse

We the People might or might not be the choice of the betting public but he was the favorite picked for the morning line by the New York Racing Association.

Mo Donegal is still thought to be the better horse over Rich Strike but it’s hard to ignore the possibilities of Rich Strike after winning the Kentucky Derby.

Sharp horse bettors will be paying attention to Creative Minister’s training this week as he could be a stretch run factor.

The field is now set, post positions are drawn and the betting odds are set from Bovada (visit our Bovada Review).

  • We the People (2-1)
  • Skippylongstocking (20-1)
  • Nest (8-1)
  • Rich Strike (7-2)
  • Creative Minister (6-1)
  • Mo Donegal (5-2)
  • Golden Glider (22-1)
  • Barber Road (12-1)

What To Watch for in This Race

We the People (2-1)

We the People might or might not be the choice of the betting public, but he was certainly the pick of the oddsmaker David Aragona, who makes the morning line for the New York Racing Association. The Arkansas Derby disappointment was forgotten by We the People using its front-running style to win the Peter Pan Stakes over this very same track, validated with a speed rating of 103.

The next two horses are likely to draw a great deal of wagering, each for different reasons as their paths uniquely cross again.

Mo Donegal (5-2) and Rich Strike (7-2)

Mo Donegal was thought of as a Derby contender until he drew the No. 1 post. If you go back look at the Churchill Downs race, Mo Donegal and long shot Rich Strike had a similar race that day.

At the top of the stretch, Mo Donegal with his highly respected jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., stood the course with a modest outside move and Rich Strike’s rider Sonny Leon took the inside gamble and the rest is historically memorable. Mo Donegal is still thought to be the better horse (5th in Derby), yet one has to consider the magical possibilities of Rich Strike.

Creative Minister (6-1)

Creative Minister was a solid third in the Preakness and made a lot of horse bettors happy as the last piece to their trifectas. Since this is a 1 ½ mile race, if jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. can get his horse in a relaxed stride and keep towards the front, this seemingly still improving three-year-old could be a stretch run factor.

Sharp horse bettors will be paying attention to Creative Minister’s training this week. Also, there is a reason why we considered this horse to be ain interesting pick in our Early Value article for the Belmont Stakes.

Nest (8-1)

Nest is the only female running with the gents and is Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher’s other entry besides Mo Donegal. Pletcher has won this race three times and knows the drill and Nest was second in the Kentucky Oaks. After watching Secret Oath at the Preakness (4th), not sure where Nest hits the board.

Barber Road (12-1)

Barber Road seems to be a better horse than the results lead one to believe. But racing is about results and all that comes up about this horse is in his last six starts, zero wins.

Unless we get an offtrack or we get another Triple Crown shocker in 2022, Skippylongstocking and Golden Glider are just along for the ride.

Top Picks and Possible Longshots for the Belmont Stakes

It would seem the three best horses are:

  • We the People
  • Mo Donegal
  • Creative Minister

We the People could stake the lead in the backstretch and take it home with his style. Mo Donegal and Creative Minister should be lurking not far behind with a chance if We the People runs a bit too quickly early and has nothing late.

Nest might not be as strong as her counterparts, but everything about her pedigree, suggests she has the stamina to be a factor. Some of the horses in her family tree include:

  • Curlin
  • A.P. Indy
  • Idol (full brother)

Rich Strike is this time the known wild card. Everything broke his way at Churchill five weeks ago, including even getting into the race. Unless Rich Strike is better than horse handicappers think, all the numbers point to a third or fourth-place finish.

We’ll go with the current favorite We the People and use the lady, Nest, as our longshot for our best bets in the 2022 Belmont Stakes.
