Detroit Red Wings vs. New York Islanders

Friday, January 27, 2023 – 7:00 PM EST at UBS Arena

Wings Dump Habs

After dropping three straight, the Red Wings have won 3 of their last 4 contests including their most recent, a 4-3 overtime victory over the lowly Canadiens last night. Michael Rasmussen, Jonatan Berggren, and Oskar Sundqvist all scored in regulation while Robby Fabbri buried the biscuit for the game-winner in overtime.

Detroit dominated play throughout the evening and outshot the Canadiens, 42-23, but Montreal goalie, Jake Allen, was on point and stymied the Red Wings’ scoring opportunities.

It was Robby Fabbri that closed things out at 2:36 into overtime and he said after the game, "We gave them a little bit too much tonight. But sometimes you get into those games, and you just gotta calm down and get back to your game as quickly as possible. We did that."

The 27-year-old Ontario native now has four goals and one assist in 11 games since returning from the third ACL tear of his career. Dylan Larkin leads all scorers with 15 goals, and 28 assists, for 43 points while goalie, Ville Husso, claimed his 17th win of the season.

Isles Slumping

The Islanders have now lost 10 of their last 11 games with their most recent coming on Wednesday night in a 2-1 loss to Ottawa. Brock Nelson was the only New Yorker to light the lamp when he tallied at 16:07 of the second period to cut the Senators’ lead in half.

But that would be all the scoring for the evening and once again the Isles came up short despite getting a solid effort from their goalie, Semyon Varlamov, who turned aside 36 of 38 shots.

“We battled,” said Casey Cizikas. “You can’t take that away. We battled hard. We worked. It’s just unfortunate. We’ve got to find a way to win these games. It’s definitely tough, but we’ve got to dig deep. We’ve just got to find a way.”

Red Wings vs. Islanders: Picks and Prediction

The Red Wings are a middling team at best that just so happens to be playing decent hockey lately. Detroit has now won 3 of their last 4 but we should note that their last two wins have gone into overtime and both those teams they defeated are the dregs of the league, the Sharks and Canadiens.

The Islanders, on the other hand, can’t buy a win lately but their goaltending and defense have been solid, however, their offense has been stuck in neutral. Consider that over their last 11 games in which the Islanders are 1-10, they have averaged only 1.6 goals per game over that span.

You’d never know I am enthusiastic about the Islanders' chances to get off the schneid as I seem to be making a case against them. However, this is more of a fade on the Red Wings than an endorsement of the Islanders. Detroit has now gone into overtime in their last two games and is playing on the second leg of back-to-back games and will likely have their backup goalie in the net.

That’s never a good spot for a team, especially one that’s on the road and one that has lost its last 5 meetings at the UBS Arena in Long Island.

Score Prediction: Islanders 3 - Red Wings 1
