After dropping three straight, the Red Wings have won 3 of their last 4 contests including their most recent, a 4-3 overtime victory over the lowly Canadiens last night. The Islanders have now lost 10 of their last 11 games with their most recent coming on Wednesday night in a 2-1 loss to Ottawa. Brock Nelson was the only New Yorker to light the lamp when he tallied at 16:07 of the second period to cut the Senators’ lead in half.
But that would be all the scoring for the evening and once again the Isles came up short despite getting a solid effort from their goalie, Semyon Varlamov, who turned aside 36 of 38 shots.
“We battled,” said Casey Cizikas. “You can’t take that away. We battled hard. We worked. It’s just unfortunate. We’ve got to find a way to win these games. It’s definitely tough, but we’ve got to dig deep. We’ve just got to find a way.”

You’d never know I am enthusiastic about the Islanders' chances to get off the schneid as I seem to be making a case against them. However, this is more of a fade on the Red Wings than an endorsement of the Islanders. Detroit has now gone into overtime in their last two games and is playing on the second leg of back-to-back games and will likely have their backup goalie in the net.
That’s never a good spot for a team, especially one that’s on the road and one that has lost its last 5 meetings at the UBS Arena in Long Island.
