New York Rangers vs. Carolina Hurricanes

Rangers vs. Panthers Playoffs Recap

The Rangers looked much better than their opponents for the first 40 minutes of Game 1 and cruised into the final stanza with a slim 1-0 lead, courtesy of Filip Chytil’s first-period tally, with momentum on their side.

However, the Hurricanes would awake from their collective slumber and began to pressure the offensive zone, keeping the Rangers on their heels throughout.

Sebastian Aho would eventually crack the code that is Igor Shesterkin, arguably the best goaltender on the planet, knotting the game at one apiece with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

It was an enormous goal that changed the course of the game and the complexion of this series entering Game 2. When overtime arrived, it wasn’t long before Ian Cole #28 of the Carolina Hurricanes scored in Game 1. banged home the game-winner just three minutes into the session to ice a 2-1 Carolina victory.

Rangers Look to Rebound

You have to give the Rangers credit. They had just come off of an exhausting seven-game series with the Penguins in which they secured a 4-3 overtime victory despite being outshot 42-30 by the relentless offense of a talented Pittsburgh team.

And here they were, staring the NHL Metropolitan Division winners right in the eye in hostile territory with a packed house of Carolina fans in the crowd and taking control from the opening face-off.

New York did an admirable job of forcing the flow of the game over the first two periods and contained the Carolina offense to a large degree. But watching the fruits of their labor vanish with only a few minutes left in the game will be a real issue moving forward.

“They put a big push on in the third period in the first 10 minutes, and we weathered that storm," Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said. "But the first two periods was perfect hockey for us. ... I thought it was our best game of the year, I really did."

How to Bet on Rangers vs. Carolina Game 2?

The NHL odds are a bit steep on Carolina to be sure but I can see the Hurricanes claiming a lopsided win against an emotionally deflated Rangers squad in Game 2 tonight.

As close as Game 1 was, we should note that the Hurricanes have owned the Rangers in recent memory. Consider that Carolina is 7-1 versus New York over their last eight games and has won four of their five meetings this season.

The Hurricanes are a force of nature (if you’ll pardon the pun) defensively, ranking first in goals allowed per game (2.4) and shots allowed per game (28.2). And while that might be somewhat mitigated by an explosive offensive team, the Rangers do not fit that bill.

New York ended the regular season ranked 17th in goals per game (3.0) and 28th in shots per game (29.2).

While the Hurricanes have made their bones on defense, they also boast a top 10 offense averaging 3.4 goals and 34.1 shots per game, both good for the ninth in the league in those categories.
