Chicago Blackhawks vs. Detroit Red Wings

Wednesday, March 8, 2023 – 07:30 PM EST at Little Caesars Arena

The Blackhawks did something on Monday night that they don’t normally do – win!

Yes, the Hawks not only won but dominated the Ottawa Senators in a 5-0 shutout. Seth Jones had a pair of goals but it was goalie Alex Stalock who stole the show with 35 saves to claim his second shutout of the season.

Look, Chicago is a lousy team, I get it, and wins like the one they had the other night are hard to come by.

However, let’s keep in mind they are facing a Detroit team that is also mired near the basement of their division and are currently on a six-game losing streak. And the oddsmakers want me to pay as high as (-235) for the privilege of backing this trainwreck?

Ah, no, we’re turning the tables and hoping we can get another winning performance out of the Blackhawks who defeated Detroit in their only meeting this season back in October when Chicago notched a 4-3 overtime win.

Let’s grab the nice price over at BetOnline as our first NHL pick.

Minnesota Wild vs. Winnipeg Jets

Wednesday, March 8, 2023 - 07:30 PM EST at Canada Life Centre

The Wild saw their four-game winning streak snapped last night in a 1-0 shootout setback against the Flames.

And now they have to pick up and fly to Winnipeg to play the second of back-to-backs.

This is where I would normally auto-fade Minnesota because betting on a team in this scenario is usually not profitable. The bookmakers know this which is why the odds are so onerous on the slumping Jets and so generous on the Wild.

However, Minnesota is the better club, they are one of the best in the business on defense, and the Jets are not known for scoring as evidenced by their 18th-ranked offense. We should also note that Minny has defeated Winnipeg in both games this season and it wasn’t even close with 6-1 and 4-1 victories.

Nope, I’m taking my chances with the Wild despite the fact they played last night as they are facing off against a Jets team that has lost six of their last seven games.

Anaheim Ducks vs. Vancouver Canucks

Wednesday, March 8, 2023 - 10:00 PM EST at Rogers Arena

Have you noticed the Canucks have been playing very good hockey lately? They have now won three of their last four and five of their last eight. But even in defeat, they have been competitive with a 5-4 shootout loss to Nashville, a 3-1 setback to the historically hot Boston Bruins, and a 2-1 loss to the Wild.

And the five teams they have beaten during that stretch are the:

  • Philadelphia Flyers
  • St. Louis Blues
  • Dallas Stars
  • Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Nashville Predators

Conversely, the Ducks have dropped two of their last three games including a 5-2 loss to the Kraken in Seattle last night.

Anaheim has only met Vancouver once this season, an 8-5 loss back in November, and I don’t see them skating with this team after getting shellacked last night.

We should also take into consideration that Anaheim will likely turn to their sparsely used third-string goaltender, Lukas Dostal (3-5, 4.00 GAA, .897 save percentage), and that’s nothing but good news for the Canucks.

Below are a few more stats to bolster our confidence in laying the lumber with Vancouver:

  • The Ducks are 4-12 in their last 16 Wednesday games.
  • The Ducks are 1-9 in their last 10 games playing on 0 days' rest.
  • The Ducks are 0-4 in their last 4 vs. Pacific Division teams.
  • The Canucks are 4-1 in their last 5 when their opponent scores 2 goals or less in their previous game.
  • The Canucks are 4-1 in their last 5 games playing on 1 day’s rest.
  • The Canucks are 10-4 in their last 14 vs. Pacific Division teams.
  • The Canucks are 20-8 in their last 28 vs. a team with a winning percentage below .400.
