New Jersey Devils vs. Washington Capitals
Thursday, March 9, 2023 – 07:00 PM EST at Capital One Arena
The Devils have dropped two of their last three games but you can’t say they haven’t tried.
New Jersey dropped a 4-3 shootout decision to Vegas and then toppled the Coyotes, 5-4, in the desert followed by a 4-3 setback to the Maple Leafs on Tuesday night.
The Caps kicked off their four-game road trip with a 7-4 loss to the Sabres before getting the benefit of facing off against a pair of cupcakes last week when they defeated the Ducks, 3-2 in overtime, before thumping the Sharks, 8-3, on Saturday.
But Monday was the end of their four-game road trip and they ended it the way they began – with a loss – this time a 4-2 defeat to the Kings.
The Devils are the best road team in the NHL and the last time these teams met, New Jersey notched a 5-1 victory.
I don’t see things being much different this time around as the Capitals simply don’t have the firepower to keep pace with the Devils and won’t be able to crack one of the best defenses in the league.

Philadelphia Flyers vs. Carolina Hurricanes
Thursday, March 9, 2023 - 07:00 PM EST at PNC Arena
The Flyers are playing out the string, confident in the notion that at least they won’t be the worst team in the Metropolitan Division this season, as that dubious distinction belongs to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
However, there’s no doubt this year’s Philadelphia edition is nothing to brag about. And in keeping with their atrocious season they are playing true to form, losers of five of their last six contests, including a 5-2 defeat to the Lightning on Tuesday night.
Conversely, the Hurricanes are one of the favorites to hoist the Stanley Cup at the end of this season and have won three straight and eight of their last 10 contests. We should also note that six of Carolina’s last eight victories have been by two goals or more. The Canes have won their last five meetings against the Flyers and I can’t see this game going any different than the rest.
Let’s eschew the moneyline at (-370) just in case things go completely sideways and instead cut the vig down considerably by laying the 1.5 goals as our second NHL pick.
This shouldn’t be close so don’t sweat it, just bet it.

Dallas Stars vs. Buffalo Sabres
Thursday, March 9, 2023 - 07:00 PM EST at KeyBank Center
The Stars are essentially the Sabres if Buffalo had any kind of defense to speak of. Unfortunately for Sabres fans, they don’t, which is why the Stars will win this game.
And to make things a bit odd, both teams play better on the road than at home with Dallas enjoying a 17-8-5 mark on the highway while the Sabres are a dismal 13-7-2 at home.
And although the Sabres scored a 3-2 overtime win over the Stars in their only meeting this season, that upset occurred in Dallas.
The Stars will have circled this game on their calendar to avenge that loss and we should also be aware that Dallas has had an extra day to rest their bones and prepare for this one.
If you need any more convincing, let’s take a look at some interesting trends favoring the Stars headed into this matchup.
- The Stars are 5-0 in their last 5 after allowing 5 goals or more in their previous game.
- The Stars are 9-1 in their last 10 Thursday games.
- The Stars are 10-4 in the last 14 meetings.
- The Sabres are 1-4 in their last 5 overall.
- The Sabres are 45-109 in their last 154 Thursday games.
- The Sabres are 2-5 in their last 7 after scoring 2 goals or less in their previous game.
- The Sabres are 2-5 in their last 7 home games.
- The favorite is 14-5 in the last 19 meetings.
